IPL 2022: Rating teams based on performances till league stage

The Indian Premier League has entered its final phase this week. With multiple teams battling it out, the top four teams will now compete for the top spot. This year, the fans have witnessed numerous highs and lows. Well, talking about the lows, nobody had expected MI to finish at the bottom of the table. But, their lack of solid performers meant that they were not able to close the game up in tight situations. This was a horrible season as per MI standards. And if we have a look at the best performers of the season, then it has to be the new franchises. With two new teams, it was difficult for them to make a mark. But, in difficult circumstances, their players have stood up for their team. Rating teams based on league stage performances in IPL 2022 10. Mumbai Indians: 2/10 Mumbai Indians. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Arguably, it was their worst season. MI had a horrible start as they lost consecutive games. It was evident that they were never settled as a squad and this hampered their performance. Adding on, failure at the top order meant that they always had to rely on the middle and lower orders to handle the pressure. But, it was too much for them and with lack of overall experience, they used to crumble under pressure as well. Talking about prominent players, Suryakumar Yadav played a few attractive knocks, but he was injured during the last phase of the group stage. The bowling department did well on most occasions. Jasprit Bumrah was spot on and was assisted perfectly by the likes of Riley Meredith. There is no doubt that they will transform into a stronger team later, with the inclusion of Jofra Archer. But, they could have done better, both in the auction and in the league stage. They won just four games out of 14 in the league stage. 9. Sunrisers Hyderabad: 2.5/10 Sunrisers Hyderabad. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The Sunrisers Hyderabad too had a poor season. With the absence of Warner and Rashid, they looked in disarray. Adding on, the likes of Williamson and company never took the initiative to shine on the bigger stage as well. The team did make a decent comeback in the middle of the group stage, but later on, everything fell apart. In 14 IPL games, SRH managed to win six of them, five of which were consecutive wins. But, with eight losses, it was a horrible time for the team. Adding on, they had a net run rate of -0.379, which is not acceptable by any means. As a team, SRH was one of the best in the middle of the tournament. However, they were over-dependent on some players like Kane Williamson, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rahul Tripathi, and a couple of others. This meant that if they failed, the team eventually lost the game. 8. Chennai Super Kings: 2.5/10 Chennai Super Kings. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Just like the Sunrisers Hyderabad, CSK as well had a poor season. The defending champions never looked like they were in this tournament to win. With four wins out of 14 games, it was a below-par result for them. They had lost the momentum during the auction only. With no Faf du Plessis and Shardul Thakur, the pressure was immense on MS Dhoni and company. Adding on, over dependency on Mukesh Choudhary and certain other bowlers hampered their performances as well. Not having Deepak Chahar available was a big disadvantage. CSK did produce some memorable matches though. This time as well, Ruturaj was their best performer. Adding on, Jadeja’s poor outing overall meant that Dhoni had to take back the role of captaincy as well. This was a dark time as fans were not able to understand what was happening in the side. 7. Kolkata Knight Riders: 3.5/10 Kolkata Knight Riders. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The Kolkata Knight Riders were another side that performed poorly this year. After ending as the finalist in 2021, this time they finished seventh on the points table. This brings out their weakness in selection. KKR had made the most number of changes in their playing XI. In 14 games, they won six but lost eight. And in those eight games, most of the games were one-sided. With a new captain, everyone was expecting them to have a decent IPL, but that was not the case. If KKR wishes to put on a good show in 2023, then they need to make some strong decisions in the mini-auction. With so many talented players going unsold, the management can look forward to including them on their side. It will be interesting to see how things pan out for Kolkata. 6. Punjab Kings: 4.5/10 Punjab Kings. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The Punjab Kings had a terrific auction this year. Their team management was successful in bringing together the best possible side this year. Well, with the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada, and numerous star players, everyone expected them to turn things around. But, that was never the case. Punjab struggled as a team as their captain was never leading from the front. This year, Mayank had a horrible season as he struggled to get going with the bat. Adding on, Punjab’s players were not able to cash in during crucial moments of the game. In 14 matches, they were able to win seven games but they lost some close games. A net run rate of +0.126 showcases their journey so far. 5. Delhi Capitals: 6.5/10 Delhi Capitals. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Without any doubt, the Delhi Capitals had the best auction this year as they were able to bring the best players from the Indian domestic scene. But, they missed out on a playoff chance by a small margin. After losing to Mumbai during their final game of the season, Delhi were knocked out of the tournament. Well, it was one of the most interesting games of the tournament. Adding on, Delhi’s misery with their bowling attack resulted in their losses as well. But, even after the Covid scare, and some major issues, they did perform well. It is just a matter of a few seasons and the fans should hope that this team lifts the trophy one day. Rishabh Pant is just 24 as of now, and with many more years to come, he can lead the side as well as the national team with much more experience. 4. Royal Challengers Bangalore: 7/10 Royal Challengers Bangalore. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The Royal Challengers Bangalore had a decent time during the group stage matches. Even though they faced a few hiccups, they were able to stick together as a group and make the most of their time. In 14 IPL games, RCB managed to win eight and lost six. A net run rate of -0.253 shows that they have been not up to the mark but their efforts have been decent. They have cashed in during the crucial stages of the game, and this has resulted in their victories. Adding on, RCB have done a tremendous job by backing their players. Because of their efforts, they have managed to make it to the playoffs. Now, it is up to their star players to step up and make a mark in the playoffs. 3. Lucknow Super Giants: 7.5/10 Lucknow Super Giants. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The Lucknow Super Giants were one of the newest additions to the IPL. This team has the likes of KL Rahul, Marcus Stoinis, and Ravi Bishnoi. And talking about their performance, the side has done a commendable job this year. LSG played 14 games in the group stage and managed to win nine of them. With a healthy net run rate of +0.251, the side has done a commendable job to reach the playoffs. It is never easy for new franchises to make a mark in their debut season, but LSG were able to do it quite easily and so was GT. Adding on, the Super Giants have invested in the players who were not approached by the established sides. This is what makes them a decent team, a side that backs the majority of its players. It will be interesting to see how things pan out for Lucknow in the second stage of IPL 2022. 2. Rajasthan Royals: 8.5/10 Rajasthan Royals. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Rajasthan have been one of the strongest teams this year. The Men in Pink have fired on all cylinders and are looking to lift the trophy for the second time. It will be interesting to see how they approach the playoffs this year. The Royals usually make it to the Eliminator, if they qualify for the playoffs. But, thanks to Ravi Ashwin, they were granted a top-two finish with a win in their last league fixture. Now, it is up to their star performers to take the initiative and make a mark on the big stage. The Royals have been a terrific unit. Even after being pushed back by the opposition, they have somehow bounced back and won the game. Well, Jos Buttler’s willow has been quiet for some time now. It will be interesting to see if he explodes again in crucial games of the playoffs. 1. Gujarat Titans: 9/10 Gujarat Titans. They have managed to win games consistently and the best part is that their team management has been able to bring out the best in their players. It will be interesting to see how they approach the playoffs. Fans should not be surprised if GT lifts the trophy this time. With 10 wins in 14 games, they have won many crunch games this season. Adding on, they are the only team to win 10 games this year. But, in the playoffs, they need to be more aggressive and competitive. With the likes of Rashid and Hardik, this looks achievable. Adding on, they have managed to bring some new faces like Yash Dayal to the scene who have performed very well so far.
