Jasprit Bumrah is the man of the moment in Indian cricket at this point in time. Despite the presence of two centurions in Cheteshwar Pujara and captain Virat Kohli and a number of other players in the Indian team, who have done well in the ongoing Test series against Australia, it is the young pacer who is in his first year in Test cricket who has won hearts more than anybody else.

The 25-year-old pacer has taken 20 wickets in three Tests against Australia so far and picked up the Man of the Match award for his match-turning performance with 9 wickets. After former India opener, Aakash Chopra called Bumrah the ‘Virat Kohli of Indian bowling’, another former India cricketer Rohan Gavaskar also came out with full praise for the Ahmedabad-born bowler.

Rohan, son of legendary Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar, said in a show on News18 that Bumrah is an “amazing talent” who puts in a lot of thinking into his bowling and outthinks the batsmen. Gavaskar gave credit to India’s bowling coach Bharat Arun and praised Bumrah for the way he has developed his skills, especially the Yorkers, slower-balls and the lethal bouncers.

‘Bumrah an absolute gem’

“Playing in T20, playing in ODIs, he’s (Bumrah) obviously got a very good slower ball. He has got an excellent yorker which we have seen in white-ball cricket. And with the pace that he bowls, the bouncer he’s got. It’s a skiddy bounder; he is quite lively to ping someone on the helmet quite often. Look, he’s someone who we’ve got to wrap up in cotton wool and make sure he performs over the next six-seven years because he is an absolute gem,” 42-year-old Gavaskar, who played 11 ODIs in 2004 scoring 151 runs and taking 1 wicket, said.

Bumrah finished his first year in Test cricket with 48 wickets in nine games and finished only third in the list with South African Kagiso Rabada topping it with 52 scalps.
