Last year, India toured Australia for a four-match Test series. In that series, Prithvi Shaw, the teen sensation, was about to play. He had a brilliant outing in his maiden series against the Windies and was expected to open the batting. However, luck had something different in store as he was ruled out of the series, owing to an ankle injury which he sustained during the warm-up match in Sydney.

In the meantime, some rumours emerged surrounding the youngster’s discipline during the tour. It was learned that he was sent back as he was losing focus. However, the 19-year-old from Thane has dismissed the reports, saying he had to return as the ankle wasn’t recovering fast enough.

“These are rumours, so I will better let it go. No one told me anything about not working hard. I wanted to play but got injured. I thought I could play the third Test (in Melbourne) but then progress of recovery was slow,” Shaw was quoted as saying in a media session of Delhi Capitals on Saturday.

“If you have had a look at my ankle, you would have known that it was really painful. Ankle wasn’t healing quickly and I had to return,” he remarked.

Trainers and physio were very committed

The National Cricket Academy (NCA) has earned the reputation of not being the best centres. Nevertheless, Shaw believes that he had a great time there. Furthermore, he talked about how he planned the two months of rehabilitation. Recently, he made his comeback on the cricket pitch, representing Mumbai in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy.

“I mean everything was perfect over there (NCA). I did a lot of sessions there. I was working to get fit before Mushtaq Ali T20 as I wanted to get used to the T20 format and then go to the IPL. That’s how I had planned my two months of rehab. Trainers and physio were very committed,” Shaw iterated.

During the T20 tournament, he couldn’t make much of an impact as he got out for single-digit scores in five innings. His top score of 71 came against Goa. Shaw is next scheduled to play for the Capitals in the upcoming edition of the prestigious Indian Premier League (IPL).
