The Chennai Super Kings got third-time lucky after failing to get their hands on the trophy for the first two times. Mumbai Indian and the Deccan Chargers finished on the top of the points table. They two teams were followed by Chennai Super Kings and the Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, the previous edition finalists failed to make it through to the finals.

For the first time in a final, a team has won the toss and elected to bat first. CSK after batting first put up 168 runs on the board for the loss of five wickets. Suresh Raina was the top-performer in the game. He scored 57 off 35 balls to put his team in a very commanding position. Despite the openers providing the team with a very slow start, they recovered quickly and MS Dhoni finished off the innings with a quickfire 22 off 15 balls.

The  Mumbai Indians never looked comfortable chasing this big a target in the finals. Sachin Tendulkar top scored in their innings with 48. But that came at a slow pace as he scored those runs almost at run a ball (45 balls). Although Kieron Pollard looked to take the game away from CSK, it was MSD’s brilliant captaincy that put down curtains to his innings. Pollard scored 27 from just 10 balls but the Indians failed to get their hands on the title.

Top performers of the season

The CSK won their first title by 22 runs. Suresh Raina was awarded the ‘Man of the Match’ award while Sachin Tendulkar was the ‘Player of the Series’ for his sheer brilliance with the bat.
