Rising Pune Supergiants qualification scenario in IPL9
Pune Rising Supergiants continued their poor show in the IPL 2016 as they faced their 8th loss in the tournament in the 11 matches they played so far. Even if RPS win in their remaining 3 matches, they finish with 12 points, a figure which didn’t help even one team to make into the playoffs in the 8 seasons of IPL.
However, mathematically, the MS Dhoni-led side still can make it through to the playoffs if they have enough amount of luck going on their side.
Here we look at how they can make into playoffs of IPL 2016:
For making into the playoffs with just 12 points, RPS will need to have a very good Net Run Rate. Despite losing 8 matches, their NRR is still positive and the 4th best among the 8 teams. With 3 more matches remaining for them, RPS should look to win with a handy margin which also effects the opposite team’s NRR at the same time.
With SRH and GL having 7 wins already, Rising Pune Supergiants need the two teams to win all their remaining games. KXIP on other hand, have 4 matches with one of them vs RPS. KXIP losing to RPS and winning in the remaining 3 games will help RPS’ chances.
Match No | Date | Home Team | Away Team | Required Result |
42 | 12-May-16 | SRH | DD | SRH |
43 | 13-May-16 | MI | KXIP | KXIP |
44 | 14-May-16 | RCB | GL | GL |
45 | 14-May-16 | KKR | RPS | RPS |
49 | 17-May-16 | RPS | DD | RPS |
50 | 18-May-16 | RCB | KXIP | KXIP |
51 | 19-May-16 | GL | KKR | GL |
52 | 20-May-16 | DD | SRH | SRH |
53 | 21-May-16 | RPS | KXIP | RPS |
54 | 21-May-16 | GL | MI | GL |
55 | 22-May-16 | KKR | SRH | SRH |
Depending upon the above-assumed results, the points table looks like:
Position | Team | Matches played | Points |
1 | SRH | 13 | 20 |
2 | GL | 14 | 20 |
3 | RPS | 14 | 12 |
4 | KKR | 12 | 12 |
5 | DD | 12 | 10 |
6 | KXIP | 13 | 10 |
7 | MI | 12 | 10 |
8 | RCB | 11 | 8 |
(Note: Even if 1-2 of the above assumed results doesn’t go in RPS’ favour, they might still have a chance if not more than 3 teams finish with 14 or more points.)
Remaining fixtures:
Match No | Date | Home Team | Away Team |
41 | 11-May-16 | RCB | MI |
46 | 15-May-16 | KXIP | SRH |
47 | 15-May-16 | MI | DD |
48 | 16-May-16 | KKR | RCB |
56 | 22-May-16 | DD | RCB |
Result of Match no. 46 between KXIP and SRH might not be a concern for RPS as KXIP win might make them finish on 12 points but stand behind RPS on the NRR.
Here are the ways in which the remaining 4 matches needed to be fare for RPS:
Case 1:
RCB winning in Match no. 41 and Match no. 48 will put MI and KKR out of playoffs. So if DD face RCB in the 56th match after coming with a win against MI in 47th match, one of DD and RCB will make into playoffs at no.3 while RPS finishes at no.4 if their NRR is pretty good after their 3 wins in last 3 games.
Match No | Date | Home Team | Away Team | Required Result |
41 | 11-May-16 | RCB | MI | RCB |
47 | 15-May-16 | MI | DD | DD |
48 | 16-May-16 | KKR | RCB | RCB |
56 | 22-May-16 | DD | RCB | DD / RCB |
Points table if the Case 1 works:
Position | Team | Matches played | Points |
1 | SRH | 14 | 20 or 22 |
2 | GL | 14 | 20 |
3 | RCB / DD | 14 | 14 |
4 | RPS | 14 | 12 |
5 | DD / RCB | 14 | 12 |
6 | KKR | 14 | 12 |
7 | KXIP | 14 | 10 or 12 |
8 | MI | 14 | 10 |
Case 2:
MI winning in Match no. 41 and Match no. 47 will put them into playoffs as no.3. For RPS, the match no.48 between KKR and RCB should be won by RCB which puts RPS at no.4 ahead of KKR. The 56th match between DD and RCB won’t affect RPS’ chances if their net run rate is improved after 3 wins.
Match No | Date | Home Team | Away Team | Required Result |
41 | 11-May-16 | RCB | MI | MI |
47 | 15-May-16 | MI | DD | MI |
48 | 16-May-16 | KKR | RCB | RCB |
56 | 22-May-16 | DD | RCB | DD / RCB |
Points table if the Case 2 works:
Position | Team | Matches played | Points |
1 | SRH | 14 | 20 or 22 |
2 | GL | 14 | 20 |
3 | MI | 14 | 14 |
4 | RPS | 14 | 12 |
5 | DD / RCB | 14 | 12 |
6 | KKR | 14 | 12 |
7 | KXIP | 14 | 10 or 12 |
8 | RCB / DD | 14 | 10 |
Case 3:
MI losing match no.41 to RCB and winning against DD in match no.46 can make up for a KKR win in match no.48 between KKR and RCB. Now the 56th match between DD and RCB won’t affect RPS’ chances if their net run rate is improved after 3 wins.
Match No | Date | Home Team | Away Team | Required Result |
41 | 11-May-16 | RCB | MI | RCB |
47 | 15-May-16 | MI | DD | MI |
48 | 16-May-16 | KKR | RCB | KKR |
56 | 22-May-16 | DD | RCB | DD / RCB |
Points table if the Case 3 works:
Position | Team | Matches played | Points |
1 | SRH | 14 | 20 or 22 |
2 | GL | 14 | 20 |
3 | KKR | 14 | 14 |
4 | RPS | 14 | 12 |
5 | DD / RCB | 14 | 12 |
6 | MI | 14 | 12 |
7 | KXIP | 14 | 10 or 12 |
8 | RCB / DD | 14 | 10 |
Case 4:
In case MI lose their remaining two games, i.e. against RCB in match no.41 and against DD in match no.46 RPS will then need KKR to win match no.48 vs RC for RPS. Now the 56th match between DD and RCB should end in a RCB win; then RPS qualifies as no.4 with a better net run rate which will be improved after 3 wins.
Match No | Date | Home Team | Away Team | Required Result |
41 | 11-May-16 | RCB | MI | RCB |
47 | 15-May-16 | MI | DD | DD |
48 | 16-May-16 | KKR | RCB | KKR |
56 | 22-May-16 | DD | RCB | RCB |
Points table if the Case 4 works:
Position | Team | Matches played | Points |
1 | SRH | 14 | 20 or 22 |
2 | GL | 14 | 20 |
3 | KKR | 14 | 14 |
4 | RPS | 14 | 12 |
5 | RCB | 14 | 12 |
6 | DD | 14 | 12 |
7 | KXIP | 14 | 10 or 12 |
8 | MI | 14 | 10 |
