The Windies came up with a much-improved performance with the bat in the second Test in Hyderabad which is currently underway. After facing a mini-collapse in between, the visitors’ lower middle order batsmen came up with a determined show to take their first innings score beyond 300.

Windies’ No.6 Roston Chase hit his fourth Test hundred in the match while captain Jason Holder, who came back in this Test after an injury, scored a fifty. Chase completed his ton on the morning of the second day but the visitors, who resumed after their overnight score of 295 for 7, lost their last three wickets for just 16 and the credit went to Umesh Yadav for grabbing all the three scalps.

The speedster, who played only one Test in England in the recent series, finished with 6 for 88 in the innings, which is his best bowling figure in the longer format and also the best in this venue for a pacer, eclipsing former left-arm fast bowler Zaheer Khan’s 4 for 69 taken against New Zealand in 2010.

Umesh polishes off Windies tail to bag six

Umesh started off the day seeing Devendra Bishoo playing on to his stumps. Chase, who was batting on 98, completed his ton but did not last long as Umesh bowled him out through an inside edge on the score of 106. In the very next ball, he took No.11 Shannon Gabriel as the batsman was caught by wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant. The pacer is now on a hat-trick and all eyes will be on his first delivery in the second innings.

Umesh’s previous best bowling figure in Test cricket was 5 for 93 against Australia in Perth in 2012. Umesh’s performance received praises from various quarters and one of them came from legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar who tweeted calling the 30-year-old bowler as the “true workhorse of the Indian bowling attack”. Tendulkar also applauded Chase and advised him to bat one spot up at No.5.
