Ashwin's comments came after Smith led Australia to a 2-1 series victory against India
After the Border Gavaskar Trophy concluded in India’s favor, with the hosts clinching the four-match series 2-1, Australia emerged victorious in the ODI series, winning it 2-1. Though India won the first match of the series playing at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the Men in Blue lost the second game in Visakhapatnam and also the third game in Chennai.
While Hardik Pandya led the Indian side in the first game before regular skipper Rohit Sharma joined the squad back for the remaining two games, the visitors were under Steve Smith’s captaincy as the senior pro led the side in regular skipper Pat Cummins’ absence. Witnessing Australia’s dominating victory over India, all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin lauded Steve Smith’s leadership.

Speaking of how the game panned out, Indian bowlers played their role brilliantly as they restricted Australian batters to 269 runs in the first innings as the Men in Blue were set a target of 270 runs to win the series. But the batters could not do justice to their role, which led to the bowlers’ efforts going in vain.
Australian bowlers were at their best as even after a fightback from India’s middle-order batters, they managed to take them down for 248 runs during the chase. As a result, the visitors won the game by 21 runs and also clinched the series by 2-1. Speaking of the other two games, Australia won the second ODI after completely dominating India.
They dished India out for a below-par total of mere 117 runs in 26 overs, and in reply, the Australian openers Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head chased it down to win the game by 10 wickets. India had won the first game of the series by five wickets, courtesy of KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja’s masterclass with the bat.
