There have been some huge debates regarding the next India Test skipper who will also be leading the team in the upcoming five-match series against England. Many experts and cricket pundits have given their opinion on who would be the perfect candidate to lead the Indian team after the retirement of some renowned senior players in Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Former India opener and domestic legend Wasim Jaffer has also entered the list and has backed India ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah ahead of Shubman Gill, despite the latter being the front-runner for the leadership role. The former India cricketer stated through a post on social media where he explained why Bumrah was the automatic captaincy choice and how Gill could be groomed as his deputy in the red-ball format. The Mumbai-born also mentioned that handing the captaincy to Bumrah could reduce the toll off 25-year-old top-order batter.

“I think Bumrah is an automatic captaincy choice, unless he doesn't want the responsibility. He should be the captain with Gill as VC - stepping in whenever Bumrah needs rest. This way Gill could also be groomed without the pressure of being the full-time captain,” Jaffer wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah's captaincy record

Gill has enjoyed a 4-1 series win against Zimbabwe, where he led the Men in Blue for the five-match tour to Zimbabwe with a relatively young India side following their T20 World Cup win in June 2024. The Punjab-born was also the highest run-getter of the series. He is yet to lead India in other formats.

Bumrah, on the other hand, too has had a brief stint as captain in international cricket. The Ahmedabad-born has led the team in two T20Is and three Test matches. While he has only won one Test match as a skipper, he did not fail to impress in his brief stint as T20I captain against Ireland, where he won the first two games of the three-match series, with the last one being abandoned due to rain. The Irish tour was also his first after an injury had ruled him out of action for 11 months.
