[Watch] ENG vs IND 2025: 'Fed up of watching him bat' - England batting coach shares honest reaction to Shubman Gill's Edgbaston excellence
"The volume of runs, not many people have done that," Marcus Trescothick said.
Shubman Gill came into the tour of England with a Test average of 35.06. There were question marks about his ability as a batter in the red-ball formats. However, the 25-year-old has silenced his doubters by scoring two centuries and a double century in his first four innings in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025.
In the first Test at Headingley, Gill scored 147 runs in the first innings but got dismissed cheaply in the second. However, in the ongoing second Test at Edgbaston, Gill has fared remarkably well in both innings. In the first innings, he smashed his career-best score of 269 and followed it up with a 162-ball 161 in the second.
Former England opener and current batting coach Marcus Trescothick was asked after the end of play on Day 4 about his thoughts on watching the Punjab cricketer go about his batting.
“Well, I’m fed up of watching him (Gill) bat, really. As much as I like watching batters get runs. He has played brilliantly well, superbly well in both games, but in particular in this game here. Getting sort of 250 and then another 150, now that’s pretty special. The volume of runs, not many people have done that. So you've got to admire his dedication, his concentration, his fitness and his skill level to come out and do it," Trescothick said in an interaction with BBC Sport.
Rain delays start on Day 5
The start of the final day of the second Test between India and England has been delayed due to rain. However, the latest reports suggest that rain has stopped and the match will resume at 5:10 PM IST. India will bowl 80 overs as they look to win a Test match at Edgbaston, Birmingham, for the first time.
England find themselves at 72/3, chasing a mammoth target of 608 runs. On the other hand, India need seven wickets to level the five-match series at 1-1.
