Navjot Singh Sidhu is one of India‘s most popular openers and has become more popular during the recent years, with his regular appearance on a comedy show hosted by comedian Kapil Sharma.

Apart from appearing in the comedy show, the former skipper has had a reduced role in cricket due to his active role in politics. Prior to joining politics, the former opener was seen regularly on the pre and post IPL shows on SET Max, alongside Gaurav Kapoor and Sameer Kochhar.

After Star Sports took over the broadcasting of the Indian Premier League, the former Indian opener is seen nowhere in the list of panellists for the pre-match talk shows alongside his role in politics.

What did the Supreme court say?

The Apex court in the country, Supreme Court today convicted Navjot Singh Sidhu for voluntarily causing hurt to a 65-year-old in a 1988 road rage case. A bench consisting of Justices J Chelameswar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul found Sidhu is guilty of Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of IPC and is fined Rs 1,000 for the offence.

“A1 (Sidhu) is guilty of Section 323 of IPC. Awarded no sentence but fine of Rs 1,000 for the offence. A2 (Rupinder Singh Sandhu) is acquitted,” the bench said. Besides being an active politician, Sidhu dons multiple hats of being a commentator, actor, judge and is also famous for his witty one-liners called Sidhuisms.

During his cricketing years, the right-handed opener was known for his fearless batting alongside fellow opener Kris Srikanth. The right-handed batsman became the first Indian player to score more than five hundred in ODIs for the country.

An earlier hearing

According to the Times of India, earlier in April, the Congress government in Punjab has asked the Supreme Court to uphold Sidhu’s conviction in the decades-old case.

The apex court had granted bail to the cricketer-turned-politician after he was sentenced to three years in prison by the Punjab and Haryana high court. Sidhu entered politics as well by joining Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and contested in the Indian general elections of 2014 from Amritsar seat.
