It looked impossible to better the way Virat Kohli batted in 2016 but the Indian run-machine registered his best year by scoring nearly 3000 runs in 2017 across all formats in International cricket. With the additional responsibility of captaincy, Kohli led India to newer heights throughout the year with his consistency. Under his leadership, India remained unbeaten in all the series at home and also in the bilateral series of two and more games away from home.

List of records that were created by Virat Kohli in the International cricket in 2017:

1 – Virat Kohli became the first captain with three 5-0 whitewashes in ODI cricket. India defeated Zimbabwe in 2013 and Sri Lanka in 2014 and 2017 under Kohli by 5-0 margin.


1 – Kohli became the first Indian captain to score a hundred in each of the four innings in Test cricket. He is also the first Indian skipper to score a duck and a hundred in the same Test. (vs Sri Lanka, Kolkata)


4 – Kohli became the first player in Test history to score double centuries in four consecutive Test series with the double hundred against Bangladesh in February. He struck double tons in all the three series he played in 2016.


6 – Virat became the first to hit six double centuries as captain in Test cricket. He went past Brian Lara’s five double tons as a skipper.


10 – Virat Kohli’s ten consecutive ODI wins are most consecutive wins for India under any captain going past MS Dhoni and Rahul Dravid’s nine consecutive ODI wins. His 12 consecutive International wins are also the most for India under a captain going past nine under MS Dhoni in 2013.


11 – With 11 centuries across formats in 2017, Kohli became the first captain in International cricket to score ten centuries in a calendar year. Kohli’s six centuries in ODI format in 2017 are also the most by any player in a calendar year as captain. He also became the first Indian captain with five Test hundreds in a calendar year.


13 – With 13 centuries in Test cricket as captain, Kohli went past Sunil Gavaskar’s 11 Test hundreds as an India captain. His seven 150+ scores are also the most by an Indian captain in this format.


31 – Virat Kohli’s 31 wins in 2017 in International cricket are the joint most for any captain in a calendar year. He equalled Ricky Ponting’s record which was created in 2005 while leading Australia (30 wins) and ICC World XI (1 win).


499 – Virat Kohli set the record for scoring six double centuries in Test cricket in shortest span (499 days). His last five double tons came in the span of 420 days which is also the shortest for any player for scoring five Test double centuries.

1000, 2000 – Kohli became the quickest to reach the 1000-run milestone (17 innings) and 2000-run milestone (36 innings) in ODI cricket as captain. He also became the quickest to the 5000 runs as captain in International cricket (93 innings).


1460 – Kohli’s 1460 ODI runs in 2017 are the most by any captain in a calendar year. He surpassed Ricky Ponting’s tally of 1424 runs in 2007.


2818 – Virat Kohli’s 2818 runs in International cricket in 2017 are the most by any Indian player and the 3rd most overall in a calendar year. His runs are also the 2nd most by a captain in a calendar year behind Ricky Ponting’s 2833 in 2005.


8000, 9000 – He became the fastest to reach the 8000 and 9000 runs milestones in the ODI cricket. He completed 8000 ODI runs in 175 innings while 9000 ODI runs in 194 innings.
