Theunis de Bruyn, the South African opening batsman, and all-rounder have landed a short-term deal with England County cricket team Surrey for a handful of first division county matches. This comes at an opportune time for the 25-year old as he will now be expected to fill the shoes of the recently-departed AB de Villiers. De Bruyn has been named in the Proteas side that will be boarding the flight for Sri Lanka in a few days.

In the literal sense, the 25-year old will be replacing de Villiers, the latter who was to play for Surrey prior to the announcement of his retirement. The all-rounder expressed happiness, stating that it was indeed an honour to be playing county cricket for a club such as Surrey, especially given the rich history.

“I am delighted to be joining Surrey, a club with rich history, for the next two Championship matches. It has always been one of my ambitions to play county cricket,” de Bruyn said.

Ball extends Nottinghamshire contract

Meanwhile, lanky England pacer Jake Ball has renewed his contract with Nottinghamshire for the upcoming season. Ball has also claimed that he is a Notts boy and this indeed is a dream come true. “Being Notts born and bred, I’m delighted to sign up to my home county for three more years,” said Ball. “It was fantastic to be involved in the success we had last year and I hope we can have more as a club in the seasons to come.”

“It’s great news that Jake has committed his future to the club,” said Notts head coach Peter Moores. “He has the ability to change a game through his pace and movement, and that’s something everyone wants in their team.”
