4. Rift with Virender Sehwag?

Amid the T20 World Cup 2009, it was rumoured that there was a rift between then-India captain Dhoni and opener Virender Sehwag. When Dhoni appeared for a press conference during the tournament, he was asked about Sehwag’s injury. He replied, saying that, whatever information related to the fitness of the players will be provided by the BCCI.

Dhoni refused to say anything further related to the matter even though he was aware of the opener’s injury status. This further aggravated the matters and accelerated the rumours of a feud between the two players. Before their game against Bangladesh, it was not just Dhoni but the entire Indian team, including Sehwag, who attended the press conference to show their unity.

Dhoni read out a statement insisting that the team spirit had been “as good as it has ever been”. He also denied any claims of a rift between himself and Sehwag and called out the media for “false and irresponsible” media reporting.
