The Sanskrit message on the Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy reads, “Yatra Pratibha Avsara Prapnotihi”, which means “where talent meets opportunity”. Over the years, the tournament has witnessed terrific talents find an opportunity and showcase their skills on a world stage. In this pursuit, it helps them to make a strong case for themselves to represent their respective country in international cricket. With the T20 World Cup scheduled later in the year, the selectors had a keen eye on the performances of the players. In IPL 2022, some players delivered their best performances to get named into the Indian team. Here are five uncapped players who might get capped soon: 1. Rahul Tripathi Rahul Tripathi (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) One of the finest top-order batters in the country, Rahul Tripathi has been consistent with his ability to score runs for the team. He shot into the limelight in the 2017 IPL, wherein his contributions helped the Rising Pune Supergiant to reach the finals. In 2021, Tripathi scored 397 runs and helped Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to emerge as a runner-up. Looking at his track record, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) availed his services for INR 8.50 crore, and the 31-year-old was a notable contributor to them. In the penultimate league match, his best innings of 76 off 44 balls came against Mumbai Indians (MI) which helped them win the match by 3 runs. Tripathi was the top batter for the SRH team with 413 runs at an average of 37.55, and his best-ever strike rate of 158.24 in the IPL. Although he could not get a place in the T20I squad to face South Africa, he is not very far from earning that India cap, if he maintains the same momentum with his performances. 2. Arshdeep Singh Arshdeep Singh. (Photo Source: Twitter/IPL) The left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh made his debut in the 2019 edition and picked up three wickets in three appearances for Punjab Kings (PBKS). He followed it up with nine wickets in eight league matches in the subsequent edition and was gradually coming to his own. He had a terrific 2021 season with 18 scalps in 12 league matches at an economy of 8.27. These performances helped him to be one of the two retained players by PBKS ahead of the 2022 season. Although he could pick only 10 wickets in 14 matches, he had a terrific economy of 7.70, as he put a brake on the opposition batters in the death overs. Arshdeep’s yorkers in the death overs kept things tight from one end and helped the other bowlers to take wickets. Eventually, the selectors named him in the 15-member squad for the home series against South Africa. If given an opportunity, he would look to make it big and help the team to excel in crunch moments. 3. Umran Malik Umran Malik. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The right-arm pacer from J&K made his IPL debut in the 2021 edition and took two wickets in three appearances for SRH. Although he could get limited opportunities, his breathtaking pace impressed the selectors, and was chosen as a net bowler for the T20 World Cup 2021. Ahead of the 2022 season, Malik was one of the three retained players by the SRH team. In the initial matches, the fast bowler was criticized for his inaccuracy and expensive economy, which did not help the team’s cause. However, his performance of 4/28 off four overs against PBKS helped him to get enough confidence under his belt. His best performance of 5/25 against Gujarat Titans (GT) stunned the opposition batters. In 14 appearances, Malik ended with 22 wickets at an economy of 9.03. The selectors rewarded him by naming him for the five-match T20I series against South Africa. 4. Tilak Varma Tilak Varma. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The left-handed batter, Tilak Varma has been a key player for the Hyderabad state team in domestic cricket. With an average of around 36 in the 2021 editions of the Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Varma got a contract with Mumbai Indians (MI) for the 2022 season. From his first knock, he displayed terrific confidence in his abilities and steered the team at a sublime rate. His highest score of 61 came against Rajasthan Royals (RR) and his partnerships with Suryakumar Yadav helped MI to be competitive in the latter half of the tournament. In 14 matches, Varma amassed 397 runs at an average of 36.09 and emerged as the second-highest run-scorer for the MI team. He batted as an opener for Hyderabad but came at different positions in the middle-order for MI. He can be an automatic selection to the Indian team. 5. Mohsin Khan Mohsin Khan. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Mohsin Khan has been a key player for the Uttar Pradesh white-ball team in domestic cricket for the last couple of years. In 35 T20s, he has scalped 47 wickets at an economy of 6.78. With fine pace and experience, he was trusted by Gautam Gambhir and KL Rahul for Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) in the 2022 season. In the game against MI, Mohsin returned with figures of 1/27. The subsequent performances of 3/24 and 4/16 against PBKS and Delhi Capitals (DC) helped him earn recognition and cement his place on the LSG side. In a must-win fixture against KKR, he finished with figures of 3/20 in four overs and helped the team reach the playoffs. Throughout the season, the pacer displayed his skills and variations to pick wickets with the new as well as the old ball.
