2. Lucknow Super Giants - Nicholas Pooran

Nicholas Pooran was picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad at the 2022 mega auction for a sum of INR 10.75 crore. He did a decent job, scoring 306 runs in 14 games at a strike rate of 144.34. However, the wicketkeeper-batter’s form dipped post the cash-rich league.

In Caribbean Premier League 2022, Pooran managed to score only 108 runs in 10 games at a strike rate of 117.39. His poor run with the bat continued in the T20 World Cup 2022 which saw him score only 25 runs in three games at a strike rate of 86.20. Given he was amid a lean patch, SRH decided against reinvesting in him for the 16th IPL edition.

Though Pooran proved his mettle in Abu Dhabi T10 League, scoring 345 runs in 10 games at a strike rate of 234.69, it was not a high-pressure environment. Therefore, when he came under the hammer at IPL 2023 auction, one would have thought the West Indies batter to fetch a lesser sum than last season but what followed was something startling as the lucknow Super Giants went hammer and tongs to sign Pooran and spent a whopping sum of INR 16 crore to grab him.

Though the West Indies batter has shown glimpses of brilliance in the IPL, he has not delivered the goods consistently. And given he has not had success in CPL 2022 and the T20 extravaganza in Australia, his batting might in high-profile tournaments is still under the scanner. Thus, one could say that LSG have overspent on the flamboyant batter.
