T20 World Cup 2022: Rating Captaincy of Super 12 teams in Week 1

Week one of the T20 World Cup 2022 is done and the action the fans saw from the top teams were spectacular. After the end of the week, cricket enthusiasts witnessed thrillers and upsets. The World Cup till now is at its best by delivering some unbelievable action to its watchers. In the competition, the high-voltage clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan provided ultimate entertainment to fans with some fabulous performances from big stars, but the intensity of the tournament increased when heavyweights such as England and Pakistan got beaten by minnows Ireland and Zimbabwe respectively. Among well-established teams, the brilliant display of these two teams is showcasing the success of this edition of the T20 World Cup. Although the margins of victories were narrow, leadership skills played a major role in the success of these teams against the giants. So far, the decisions taken by the captains of both teams have produced phenomenal results in the competition. With these kinds of cricketing action, fans are exhilarated about the contests in the next two weeks. Below, we have rated the skippers of Super 12 teams on their performance based on Week 1 12. Scott Edwards - 4/10 The Netherlands participated in the tournament as an associate team hence, no one expected them to win the trophy but in the past, their record of upsetting England twice in the tournament shows their skillset as a team. In the T20 World Cup 2022, the Dutch had a great time in the first round of the tournament beating Namibia and UAE, but the team failed in the Super 12 when it faced some fierce competition from Bangladesh and India. Talking about Scott Edward’s performance as a captain, the 26-year-old looked good. The Dutch skipper showcased his adeptness as a leader in the game against Bangladesh by using his bowlers cleverly. His brilliant decisions against Bangla Tigers yielded positive results for the team as Bangladesh were restricted to 144/8. While as a batter, he failed to do anything special for the team. In the remaining matches of the tournament, Edwards along with other batters of the team will look to do well against Pakistan and South Africa to leave an impact in the tournament. 11. Shakib Al Hasan - 3/10 Bangladesh showed faith in Shakib’s leadership skills by appointing him the captain of Bangladesh again. With Shakib holding the rein, Bangladesh were looking for some plucky displays in the T20 World Cup 2022 as the veteran in his glorifying career has played a major role in the evolution of Bangladesh cricket. But so far in the tournament, Bangladesh haven't succeeded in doing anything big under Shakib’s captaincy. In the first match of the tournament against The Netherlands, the lackluster batting could have lost the team points and Shakib himself in the game didn’t set standards for other players as the left-hander got out by playing a negligent shot. Against South Africa, the skipper again failed to get runs with his bat. His laxity as a skipper and player was visible as the all-rounder didn’t review the umpire’s decision of lbw against him. Earlier, Riley Rossouw punished Bangladesh bowlers for going to the field with poor tactics. Since the last World Cup, nothing much has changed for the Bangladesh team. Their tendency of struggling against big teams continued under Shakib too. 10. Babar Azam - 4/10 In the last edition of the T20 World Cup, Babar Azam was hailed for his captaincy. The Pakistan skipper proved his leadership skills by taking his team to the semi-final of the 2021 T20 World Cup. The Pakistan skipper had led from the front by scoring big as a batter, but in this edition, Babar failed as a captain and batter. On the bouncy pitches Down Under, Babar struggled to amass runs in front of fast bowlers. As a captain too, he has been ineffective so far in the tournament. Against India, his bizarre decision of not finishing Nawaz’s spell in the middle overs forced him to face flak from fans and former Pakistani players. The story doesn’t end here, as the skipper again faced criticism for facing an embarrassing defeat against Zimbabwe. With the loss, Babar’s captaincy is getting questioned by some former greats. In the next three matches of the tournament, Babar has to do his best as a captain and batter. 9. Mohammad Nabi - 5/10 Afghanistan, in this World Cup, had come up as a dangerous side, and in the contest against England, Mohammad Nabi and his boys proved it by showcasing excellent bowling performances. Afghanistan, while playing with the young and inexperienced side in Australian conditions, gave a tough time to the star-studded English side. While defending the target of 113, Nabi showcased his excellent leadership skills by managing his bowlers according to the situation. On the other side, Nabi failed to come up with a proper plan to face pace bowlers on fast Aussie tracks. His own display with the bat against England raises concerns for the team. 8. Jos Buttler - 5/10 After Eoin Morgan’s retirement from International cricket, Jos Buttler was given the captaincy mantle of the English team and the T20 World Cup 2022 was a perfect opportunity for him to prove his leadership skills. To gear up for the World Cup, England arrived in Australia early to play a 3-match series against the Kangaroos. In the series, England under Buttler played competitive cricket by defeating Australia, 2-0. With the kind of preparation, the English team was expected to have a blazing start by crushing Afghanistan in the first match. But in the match, England’s batting line-up struggled to chase down a mere 113. Along with other batters, Buttler also failed to perform in the match. England, in the T20 World Cup have been placed in the group of death. Despite knowing the fact, Buttler and his men were unsuccessful against Ireland. According to the Duckworth-Lewis method, the English team were five runs behind Ireland, which eventually led to the loss of the Englishmen against Irish. Thus far, playing two games, under Buttler’s captaincy, the English batters looked poor by getting dominated by bowlers, and to make it to the next level, the skipper has to inspire his boys to be aggressive. 7. Dasun Shanaka - 6/10 After having an unsuccessful campaign in the last edition of the tournament under Dasun Shanaka, Sri Lanka will look forward to having a stunning journey in this World Cup. Their victory against teams such as India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup will boost the confidence to clinch the trophy. Since 2021, Shanaka has been the skipper of the team and winning the Asia Cup was his highest achievement. This time, by winning the prestigious T20 World Cup trophy for Sri Lanka with his boys, Shanaka will look to bring joy to the people of the country. So far, in the Super 12 round, Sri Lanka have played three games in which they won one comfortably against Ireland but got beaten against Australia and New Zealand. To qualify for the next stage, Sri Lankan fans will expect their team to come stronger in the remaining matches. 6. Aaron Finch - 6/10 Australia are the defending champions as well as the host of this edition of the T20 World Cup. For Aaron Finch and Co., these conditions are the best to defend the title, but in the opening game, the team’s drubbing at the hands of New Zealand jeopardised Australia’s chances of qualifying for the next round. In the match, his decision to bowl second after winning the toss backfired as the Kiwis put up a mammoth 200. The 35-year-old Finch, took retirement from ODI cricket to focus on the shortest format of the game. With his decision to retire from the longer form of limited-over cricket, fans were expecting Finch to be relaxed as a captain and batter. But in the tournament, his struggle with the bat continued due to his abysmal batting displays in two matches. For Australia, he plays the role of a skipper and opener but the veteran has failed to fulfill both responsibilities. Against Sri Lanka, he failed to rescue his team as the batter as he completely struggled to play attacking strokes against the bowlers. In the end, the Aussies sealed a victory with Marcus Stoinis’s flamboyant cameo, but to qualify for the knockout stage, the Australian skipper has to elevate his game to help his squad dominate the World Cup. 5. Craig Ervine - 7/10 Zimbabwe qualified for Super 12 after having a fine journey in the 1st round. After qualifying for Super 12, the team was seen as a potential threat to big teams. With some quality players such as skipper Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza, the squad had the ability to upset big teams in the group. And against Pakistan, it became true as the game became a nightmare for Pakistan in the World Cup. Under their skipper Ervine, Zimbabwe scripted a famous victory by defeating the Men in Green by one run. Defending a low total of 130, Zimbabwe never lost hope of winning the game. The skipper Ervine in pressure situations held his nerves and used his resources in a brilliant way. In the tournament, with a historical win, Zimbabwe are looking vivacious under their captain Craig Ervine. 4. Temba Bavuma - 7/10 South Africa have played amazing cricket in the tournament so far. With a stunning batting display against Zimbabwe and a comprehensive victory against Bangladesh, South Africa entered the World Cup in style. After failing to qualify for the semis in the last edition of the tournament despite playing good cricket, Proteas under Temba Bavuma will look to win the title for the first time. Talking about his captaincy, Bavuma’s journey has been going well in the competition, but with the bat, the South African skipper has not been up to the mark and is expected to deliver. Bavuma, in recent matches, has performed miserably but the team management has shown faith in him by backing the skipper to lead the team. In the massive games against India and Pakistan, Bavuma has to shine with his bat to help his team emerge victorious. 3. Andrew Balbirnie - 7/10 In the T20 World Cup, Ireland’s journey has been relishing. In the first round, Ireland beat two-time champions West Indies to qualify for the Super 12. Andrew Balbirnie, after leading the team for almost three years, is looking confident in this World Cup. The decisions taken by him for the team in the tournament have been outstanding. After losing to Sri Lanka in the first game of the Super 12 stage, he led the team to an amazing win against England. His valuable innings against England made a difference between the two teams in the contest. For the next games, the Irish team, under their shrewd captain, will look to upset other teams with their aggressive game plans. The team’s performance against West Indies and England is a warning to other heavyweights such as Australia and New Zealand. 2. Kane Williamson - 8/10 Before the tournament, there were talks about New Zealand’s poor record in Australia, but Kane Williamson’s team started the tournament with a bang by beating hosts Australia by a colossal margin. With a fierce start in the competition, Kiwis have become favourites to win the trophy. Williamson, who is holding the reins of the team for more than six years, is looking geared up for the big clashes in the tournament. New Zealand under Kane Williamson will strive to quench their thirst for winning the T20 World Cup by getting their hands on the trophy. In the last edition, the Black Caps’ ended their journey as runners-up by getting crushed by Australia in the final. 1. Rohit Sharma - 9/10 After performing dismally in the last T20 World Cup, India, this time are playing under their new captain Rohit Sharma. With a remarkable T20 record in Australia, the Men in Blue are expected to do well in the tournament. With stupendous victories over arch-rivals Pakistan and Netherlands, Rohit and his boys are emboldened for the next contests against South Africa and Bangladesh. Until now, India under Rohit are top of the points table. As everything so far has been positive for the team in this tournament, the decisions taken by the skipper in the games seem perfect. With the bat, Rohit’s half-century against Netherlands has boosted the team’s confidence, and for future fixtures, the 35-year-old captain will look to gain confidence by playing some impactful knocks for the team.
