Richard Thompson has been reappointed as the Chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board following a major change in their rules for a term as Chairman. From being a Chairman for a term of five years, an individual can now be a Chairman of the board for two terms of up to three years each, as per the ECB’s Articles of Association, which saw an update to the eligibility clause earlier this year.

Thompson, who was elected as the Chairman of the ECB in 2022, was set to last in his post till September 2027. Due to the amendment in the rule, his first term came to an end. Likewise, Thompson's second term is set to start soon and will end in September 2027. Thompson has the aim of making cricket the most inclusive sport in the country.

Thompson grateful to ECB for continued confidence

After being elected unanimously for the second term in a row, Thompson was honoured to continue in the role. He vowed to work closely with the stakeholders of the board and inspire communities in the process. He was grateful for showing confidence in him to continue his job.

"I’m honoured to be able to continue serving the game I care so passionately about. Whether it’s growing participation and breaking down barriers or supporting our professional game and England teams, I’ll continue to work closely with our stakeholders to deliver a game that truly reflects and inspires our communities. I’m grateful to the Board for their confidence and to everyone across the cricketing family for their continued support," Richard Thompson said.

Katie Bickerstaffe, the ECB’s Senior Independent Director, spoke about Thompson and claimed him to be a respected individual. He agreed that the Chairman is supported by the wider community on the board and hoped to lead the ECB to a period of global transformation.

"Richard is respected throughout the game. The Board and the wider game is fully supportive of his agenda to become the most inclusive team sport, grow and unite the game, and to lead cricket through a period of global transformation," she said.
