Reports: Shane Watson interested in PCB's lucrative PKR 4.6 crore-a-month offer

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made a bankable offer to former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson to become the head coach of Pakistan's national team. The staggering annual salary of $2 million, equivalent to around PKR 4.6 crore per month, has piqued Watson's interest after he initially showed reluctance due to family commitments.

If secured, this deal would make Watson the highest-paid coach in Pakistan's cricketing history. According to sources close to the 42-year-old, he is seriously considering the mouthwatering proposal from the PCB.

Shane was not too keen due to spending long periods away from his family, but the financial figures involved make this opportunity too good to ignore. Central to these negotiations is the pivotal role of CEO Salman Naseer, alongside PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, currently engrossed in ICC deliberations in Dubai.

Shane Watson to consider PCB's offer

As per the deal being discussed, Watson would only be responsible for Pakistan's white-ball setup. The PCB would still need to appoint another head coach for the Test side. Former pacer Wahab Riaz has been key in facilitating negotiations between Watson and the PCB.

Pakistan with a busy cricket calendar over the next year with the T20 World Cup, and the New Zealand series at home. Having an experienced campaigner like Watson could prove to be a wise investment by the PCB as they aim for consistent performances.

Watson took up coaching roles with IPL franchises and the Bangladesh Premier League after retiring as an explosive all-rounder who won two World Cups with Australia. Earlier also some Australian greats were part of the coaching staff of Pakistan. Mathew Hayden was the batting coach of Pakistan during the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Pace bowler Shaun Tait was the bowling coach of the team for a year.
