India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav’s mother was recently seen offering prayers for Shreyas Iyer’s speedy recovery during the Chhath Puja celebrations. Surya's mother made the gesture after Iyer sustained a serious injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney.

Iyer’s injury occurred while attempting to take a diving catch to dismiss Alex Carey. The 30-year-old landed heavily on his left side, injuring his abdomen. What initially looked like a routine fall turned into a major health scare when medical scans revealed that he had suffered a laceration of the spleen, causing internal bleeding.

The BCCI confirmed that the cricketer was immediately rushed to a Sydney hospital and admitted to the ICU, where he underwent treatment to stop the bleeding. Doctors later described the injury as potentially life-threatening had it not been treated on time. Fortunately, his condition has since stabilised, with reports confirming that he is out of the ICU but will remain under observation for a few more days.

As millions of Indians observed Chhath Puja, a video went viral on social media showing Suryakumar Yadav’s mother performing the rituals while praying for Iyer’s recovery.

“Main ye bolna chahti hu ki Shreyas Iyer ke liye sab log pray kijiye, kyunki maine suna ki uski tabiyat theek nahi hai. Mujhe bilkul acha nahi laga," she can be heard saying in the video.

He is replying on the phone, which means he is stable: Suryakumar Yadav

Notably, Suryakumar himself could not attend the Puja due to India’s ongoing tour to Australia, but addressed the situation during a press conference in Canberra. He revealed that he had tried to contact Iyer on the day of the incident but could not reach him initially. Later, the team’s physio informed him that Iyer was stable and responding to treatment.

"We spoke to him at least on the first day when we got to know that he had an injury. I called him first. Then I found out that he did not have a phone. So I called the physio, Kamlesh. He told me that he is stable. On the first day, I don't know how, but he was looking good. We have been talking for two days now. He has been replying. If he is replying on the phone, it means he is stable. There is also a doctor there, so it is looking good. I mean, he is good. He is talking. Everything is normal. He said that he will take care of himself for a few more days. But he has been replying, talking to everyone, so it is good," he said.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has stepped in to ensure Iyer’s comfort and support during recovery. According to reports, the board is making arrangements for a member of Iyer’s family to travel to Sydney and stay with him during his treatment.
