Former Indian wicket keeper, Chandrakant Pandit named Mumbai Ranji coach: Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has appointed former Indian wicket keeper, Chandrakant Pandit as the coach of the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team and will also be the head coach of the Mumbai Cricket Association’s indoor academy at Bandra Kurla Complex.

Alongside Pandit, Milind Rege has been appointed as the chairman of the senior selection panel of the MCA. This decision has been taken by the MCA’s Improvement Committee, which is headed by none other than the former Indian skipper and the former chief of the selection committee of the BCCI, Dilip Vengsarkar.

Rege, who is the former captain of the Mumbai Ranji side will be leading a four-member senior selection panel with former Mumbai, left arm spinner Ravi Thekar, former left arm bowler of India, Karsan Ghavri and former batsman, Nishit Shetty and other members.

Also, other heads of the selection committee for the teams of various age groups were being named. Like, Ranjan Baindoor has been named as the head to under-19 team’s selection committee, Ramesh Vajge has been named as the head to under-16 and Rajesh Sutar has been named as the head to under-14 selection committee. Trupti Bhattacharya has been named as the head to women’s selection panel.

Dilip Vengsarkar told the media that the choice of Chandrakant Pandit as the coach of Mumbai was a sound one and his term goes in for two years. He has been the coach of the Mumbai side in the past.

Vengsarkar said to a media source, “Chandu has been around for a long time and under him we won a lot (of titles). Amre did extremely well last season but wasn’t keen to coach. Pandit is a proven guy, excellent strategist and good in management. He was the best we had.”

There were other names in the likes of Sameer Dighe, Sairaj Bahutule and Sulakshan Kulkarni who were discussed before Pandit’s selection was made.

Reportedly, MCA will also be appointing batting and bowling coaches in this season.

Vengsarkar further said, “We have plans to take part in the Buchi Babu and KSCA tournaments. The under 23 is a very important age group. We have also decided to pick 20 players in the under 12 age group and groom them so that they will be available for the under 14 level.”
