After suffering a defeat in the second ODI, South Africa made an emphatic comeback in the third and final game against Ireland. The Proteas side didn’t put a foot wrong in Dublin and walked away with a 70-run triumph. With this win, South Africa managed to draw the three-match series 1-1. Notably, the visitors were under the pump heading into this game as Ireland thrashed them by 43 runs in the previous encounter.

With the first game being washed out due to rain and the hosts emerging victorious in the following contest, South Africa was on the verge of losing an ODI series against an associate team. However, it didn’t happen as the Temba Bavum-led side switched its A-game on. Opting to bat first, the visitors got off to a flying start with Janneman Malan and Quinton de Kock attacking bowlers go after the bowlers straightaway.

Both openers registered centuries and piled up 225 runs for the first wicket. South Africa eventually posted 346/4 in their allotted 50 overs. In reply, the Irishmen never really looked in the hunt as wickets were falling at regular intervals. All-rounders Curtis Campher and Simi Singh did well in fighting back, and the latter even scored a century.

However, their efforts weren’t enough as the home team got bundled out for 276 in 47.1 overs. Andile Phehlukwayo and Tabraiz Shamsi were the pick of the South African bowlers, scalping three wickets apiece. Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj also got a couple of wickets.

Notably, this win helped South Africa advance one place up in the ICC Super League points table. They are now holding the 10th position with 24 points. At the same time, Ireland remained in fifth place despite the loss.

We were able to level the series that’s a positive: Temba Bavuma

Meanwhile, South African skipper Temba Bavuma was pleased with his side’s effort. “On the game as a whole, probably a better showing from us compared to the previous game. We were able to level the series that’s a positive but the last 10-15 overs of our bowling overs wasn’t the way we wanted to finish. Quinny (Quinton de Kock) and Janneman (Malan) leading the way – those are the type of performances we are looking for from the batting unit,” Bavuma said after the game.

“We hope that’s just the start of good things to come as far as the batting is concerned. All in all from a bowling effort it was a good showing, guys like Andile (Phehlukwayo) taking wickets at crucial times – that helped,” he added.
