IPL 2018: Players who were sold at more than 10 times their base price

Cricketers from all across the globe look forward to taking part in this cash-rich league. Not only does it ensure a players’ financial stability, it witnesses a player receiving the experience he requires on the international stage. In the auction this year, the franchises spent some great amounts to get some top quality players in their side. All the teams emptied more than 90 percent of their purse balance to build the squads. Apart from the iconic marquee players, the franchises also focussed on young players who were performing well at the domestic level. In fact, some of the younger players attracted much higher bids than the senior players. There are many players who turned out to be millionaires after the IPL auction. While some top notch players didn’t attract great bids, quite many went from rags to riches. They earned more than they could ever dream of getting. Here is the list of players who earned more than 10 times their base price at the IPL Auction 2018 1. Krishnappa Gowtham | RR | INR 6.2 crore | Base Price: INR 20 Lakhs | 31 times Krishnappa Gowtham is an all-rounder who bowls off-spin. He boasts of a very good economy rate of 7.06. He made it into the headlines when Mumbai Indians purchased him for ₹2 crores in 2017. However, he didn’t get a chance to feature in the XI in any of the games. But he got a chance to share the dressing room with one of his biggest inspirations, Harbhajan Singh. Gowtams’ friends fondly call him ‘Bhajji’ after seeing his admiration for the ‘Turbunator’. In 2016, he made a comeback into Karnataka’s Ranji Trophy side and took 18 wickets in his first three matches. His consistency earned him a place with the India A team in 2017. Apart from being a good bowler, Gowtham can also strike the ball big. He has a massive strike rate of 160 with the bat. Gowtham is all likely to make his IPL debut this year for the Rajasthan Royals. He was picked by the RR for ₹6.2 crore which is 31 times his base price. 2. Krunal Pandya | MI | INR 8.8 crores | Base Price: INR 40 Lakhs | 22 times Krunal Pandya is another player who has made it huge in the auction. He is a very well known figure in the Indian cricketing circles. Krunal is the elder brother of Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya. A shoulder surgery in 2015 meant that Krunal had virtually not played a competitive game for almost a year, but that did not stop Mumbai Indians for putting in a strong bid of Rs. 2 crores. He didn’t let Mumbai Indians down and had some spectacular performances in the IPL. He is considered a limited-overs specialist and is highly capable of clearing the fence. Krunal bats left-handed and is a slow left-arm orthodox bowler. In 2017, Krunal scored 243 runs and picked 10 wickets in 13 matches. The Mumbai Indians had no hesitations in getting him back into the team. They used their RTM card for Krunal in the auction uniting the Pandya brothers in the Mumbai setup once again. Krunal can hit the ball big and is also very handy with the ball. He is one of the best finds for the Mumbai Indians. He was sold at a massive ₹8.8 crore, 22 times his base price. 3. D’Arcy Short | RR | INR 4 crores | Base Price: INR 20 Lakhs | 20 times D’Arcy Short has had a phenomenal BBL season and is the leading run-scorer out there. He packs a punch and can hit the ball long. He is a slow left-arm orthodox bowler and can roll his arm over as and when required. D’Arcy Short plays for the Hobart Hurricanes and he blasted the highest individual score in BBL history this season. The 27-year-old scored 740 runs at an average of 41 and strike rate of 152 in the 19 BBL matches he played this far. He also has seven wickets to his name. Short set the BBL stage on fire this year. He scored 504 runs in 10 matches at a massive average of 56. Also, his strike rate is close to 150 and he picked 3 wickets this season. With the kind of picks the Rajasthan Royals have made, it seems that they followed all the cricketing leagues around the world very closely. He is a great addition to the Rajasthan team for IPL 2018 and was picked at ₹4 crores, 20 times his base price. 4. Jofra Archer | RR | INR 7.2 crores | Base Price: INR 40 Lakhs | 18 times Jofra is turning heads in the BBL and he is one of the top performers in the league. He played this season for the Hobart Hurricanes and they have already signed him for the next two seasons earlier today. He was picked in the IPL purely based on his BBL performances. Archer bowls at some great pace and also hits the right areas. He is not so easy to get away. Further, he is a lightning fast fielder. He ‘caught and bowled’ and his run-out from the deep are trending in the recent times. Dale Steyn also recently lauded the Windies fast bowler. He said that Jofra will be the next big thing in cricket. Steyn has played alongside Jofra for Sussex earlier. In 35 T20 matches he played thus far, he has taken 44 wickets. He featured in 11 BBL games and picked 16 wickets with best figures of 3-4. With all the homework RR has done, Jofra seemed to be one of their obvious choices. He was picked at 18 times his base price. 5. Nitish Rana | KKR | INR 3.4 crores | Base Price: INR 20 Lakhs | 17 times Nitish Rana was a phenomenal performer for the Mumbai Indians in the last season. He made the No.3 position in the batting order his own and scored quite many runs. Although Mumbai Indians seemed to be interested in him, financial constraints didn’t let them buy him. Rana hails from Delhi and is quite a consistent performer in the domestic circuit. He was bought by the Mumbai Indians in 2016. In the two seasons he played so far, Rana scored 437 runs in 17 matches. In the 2017 season, he played 13 matches and scored 333 runs with a top score of 62 not out. He is an aggressive player by nature and can hit the ball long and hard. He was grabbed by the KKR for ₹3.4 crores, 17 times his base price at 2018 IPL auction. 6. Rahul Tripathi | RR | INR 3.4 crores | Base Price: INR 20 Lakhs | 17 times Just like Nitish Rana, Rahul Tripathi was also a terrific performer in the last season. He hits the ball long and rotates the strike very well. The 26-year-old batsman plays first-class cricket from Maharashtra. In February 2017, he was bought by the Rising Pune Supergiant team for his base price of INR 10 lakhs. The 2017 IPL season has been a revolution for this young batsman. He opened the innings for the Rising Pune Supergiant and scored two fifties in the season. Tripathi also has a very good strike rate of 146.44 and played a crucial role in seeing RPS through to the finals. He scored 391 runs in the 14 matches that he has played thus far with a top score of 93. Rahul is picked by RR at 17 times his base price. 7. Kamlesh Nagarkoti | KKR | INR 3.2 crores | Base Price: INR 20 Lakhs | 16 times Young Kamlesh is one of the top finds for India in the Under-19 World Cup. Kamlesh took the entire world by surprise with his ability to ball fast. Kamlesh regularly hits the 145-mark and sometimes clocks up speeds over this. He grabbed the eyeballs of many with his impressive performances at the World Cup. Kamlesh hails from Rajasthan and playing in the IPL should definitely do his confidence a world of good. He looked very impressive and constantly questions the batsman with his bowling. Kamlesh grabbed seven wickets in the U-19 World Cup thus far and has been very promising. Kamlesh also possesses some good skills with the bat and can come in handy if required. He is all set to make his IPL debut this year. Following up his good performances, he was picked at 16 times his base price by the KKR. 8. Ishan Kishan | MI | INR 6.2 crores | Base Price: INR 40 Lakhs | 15.5 times Ishan Kishan is just 19-years-old. This young left-handed batsman can change the course of the game when he gets going. His abilities were first noticed in the U-19 World Cup in 2016. Ishan was exceptional in that tournament. He earlier represented the Gujarat Lions and scored 277 runs in 11 matches at an average of 27.70. He also played five matches in the 2016 IPL season. Although he didn’t have a great season last year, the Indian wicketkeepers have had a great demand in this auction. After letting off Parthiv Patel and Jos Buttler, MI was in search of a good wicketkeeper who bats well. Young Ishan Kishan ended their quest and was bought for a massive ₹6.2 crore. Ishan was picked at 15.5 times his base price. 9. Khaleel Ahmed | SRH | INR 3 crores | Base Price: INR 20 Lakhs | 15 times The Sunrisers have always been a side that backs its bowlers. It is no different this time as they managed to get a good, young crop of Indian bowlers. Khaleel is one among them and is doing well in the domestic circuit. He was one of the very few uncapped players who attracted bids and in his case, it went into crores. The youngster is delighted to have earned this opportunity to feature in the upcoming edition of the IPL. His main aim is to play for India by doing well in the upcoming edition of the Indian T20 league. Moreover, he bowls at over a 140 clicks. He was the second highest wicket-taker in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy. The left-arm pacer picked as many as 17 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 15.77. His economy during this period was 6.77 only which is commendable in the shortest format of the game. Further, Khaleel idolizes Zaheer Khan and is a very good pick by the SRH. He was brought at 15 times his base price. 10. Karun Nair | KXIP | INR 5.6 crores | Base Price: INR 50 Lakhs | 11.2 times Karun Nair took the whole of India by a surprise when he hit a Test match triple ton against England. Also, he is only the second Indian after Virender Sehwag to achieve this feat. He earned the India cap on the basis of his performances in the domestic circuit. He is a technically sound right-handed batsman with a good temperament and technique. Nair was initially bought by the RCB in 2012. Later in 2016, he represented the Delhi Daredevils and also captained the team last year. Nair played 55 IPL games so far with 1158 runs under his belt. However, his averages are on the lower side but have a decent career strike rate. He didn’t have a great season in 2017 and has scored only 281 runs in the 144 matches he played. There was a mini-bidding war for Nair. He was finally picked by KXIP for ₹5.6 crores, 11.2 times his base price. 11. Manish Pandey | SRH | INR 11 crores | Base Price: INR 1 crore | 11 times The talks about the SRH auction story revolve all around Manish Pandey. He is the costliest cricketer SRH has ever purchased at the auction. Many expected him to be retained by the KKR as he was a terrific performer for them. He is the first Indian to hit an IPL century. The flamboyant right-hand top-order batsman scored an unbeaten 114 for the Royal Challengers Bangalore against the Deccan Chargers in IPL 2009. He is also a regular member of the Indian team. Manish scored 396 runs in the 14 matches he played in 2017. He scored over 2000 runs in the IPL with over a hundred games under his belt. However, this season will see a shift in bases for Manish as he will travel down towards the south to Hyderabad. This is also the first time that he and Robin Uthappa will be playing in different teams in IPL. Manish was sold at ₹11 crores which is 11 times his base price. 12. Siddarth Kaul | SRH | INR 3 crores | Base Price: INR 30 Lakhs | 10 times Kaul was part of the Indian team that won the 2008 Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia. He played a crucial role in the team’s victory and has since been making waves in the domestic circuit. He claimed a five-for on his first-class debut for Punjab in 2007-08. However, he failed to be consistent. Kaul played for KKR and DD before he was picked by SRH in 2016. He is the last man on this list and was sold exactly at 10 times his base price. He had a good season for Sunrisers last year and looked impressive. In the 10 games that he played, he picked 16 wickets at an average of 18.75. Former Indian skipper, MS Dhoni also lauded him for his bowling last year. This saw many franchises showing interest in him. But it was the Sunrisers who spent ₹3 crores to acquire his services, yet again.
