“Survival of the fittest,” they said. The Royal Challengers Bangalore continue their surviving instinct with the 2nd straight marginal win that kept their playoff chances alive. One of the main reasons for their initial failure was their struggles with the ball in the powerplay overs. In the first eight matches, only three players were dismissed by the RCB bowlers in the first six overs. However, since Dale Steyn’s is back in playing XI, things have changed a bit for the Virat Kohli-led team as they bagged three wickets against KKR and four against CSK in the powerplay.

Here are the lesser known stats recorded during yet another close win for the RCB

A first after the comeback for CSK

The Chennai Super Kings came into the game from suffering a big defeat to the Sunrisers Hyderabad. By losing to the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the CSK team recorded their first instance of losing consecutive matches since their readmission to the IPL in 2018.

The last ball miss:

MS Dhoni missed out on the final delivery when they needed two runs to win only after scoring 24 runs in first five balls of the last over. The highest that the Chennai Super Kings failed to chase down on the final ball of an IPL game is ten runs which they did on multiple instances. Prior to the game, CSK chased down less than six runs which they needed prior to the last legitimate ball of an IPL game on six instances.

Dhoni’s best and CSK closest:

Dhoni’s unbeaten 84 in this game is now his highest individual score in the Twenty20 format. His previous best in this format was 79* against the Kings XI Punjab in the previous edition. Unfortunately, both the knocks resulted in a defeat. These two innings were recorded during CSK’s narrowest defeats while chasing. The Super Kings lost to the RCB team by 1-run and lost to the Kings XI by four runs during the previous season game.

A first for Raina in four seasons:

Suresh Raina was cleaned up by a near yorker from Dale Steyn on the very first ball he faced. Thus, he registered his first duck in the IPL in four seasons. His last duck in this league came in the 2015 Qualifier game also against RCB. The last instance of Raina getting dismissed on the very first ball without scoring was way back in the 2013 IPL final against Mumbai Indians.
