The match between the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium turned out to be exciting. MS Dhoni played a captain’s knock of 84 from 48 balls with five fours and seven sixes, and the masterclass almost got his team over the line. Nevertheless, RCB somehow managed to hold their nerves and won the encounter by one run.

RCB end with an under-par score

The Challengers could only score 161 runs in 20 overs after being put in to bat first. Deepak Chahar struck the body blow, dismissing RCB skipper Virat Kohli in his second over. AB de Villiers mistimed a few to score 25 off 19 and then perished to Ravindra Jadeja. Akshdeep Nath and Parthiv Patel took charge and put on 41 runs for the fourth wicket. Parthiv went on to notch his half-century in a mere 36 balls.

The wicketkeeper scored 53 from 37 with two fours and four sixes. Nath contributed with a 20-ball 24. Marcus Stoinis came ahead of Moeen Ali and got out after a 13-ball 14. Ali, coming at number six, played yet another useful hand of 26 runs from 16 balls with five boundaries. For the Super Kings, Chahar, Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo picked up two wickets each while Imran Tahir got one wicket.

Dhoni’s efforts go in vain

The CSK got off to the worst possible start as Dale Steyn nipped out Shane Watson and Suresh Raina in the very first over with his pace and ferocity. While Watson edged one to Stoinis in the slips, Raina succumbed to a lethal Yorker from the Steyn Gun. Opener Faf du Plessis tried to break free, but he fell prey to Umesh Yadav off a mistimed pull shot. Thereafter, Yadav sent Kedar Jadhav packing.

Then MS Dhoni and Ambati Rayudu added 55 runs together, after which Yuzvendra Chahal castled the latter, who scored a run-a-ball 29. In the last five overs, CSK required 70 runs and the task was getting daunting. Jadeja was the next match to be dismissed. 26 runs were needed off the last over,  and Dhoni came to the party, demolished Umesh, but Parthiv pulled off a run out in the last ball to save RCB.

Here is how Twitter expressed its astonishment
