Sunrisers Hyderabad managed to come on top in a group stage match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), played on April 15 (Friday). Former KKR batter Rahul Tripathi was adjudged the Player of the Match for his excellent performance.

SRH skipper Kane Williamson, after winning the toss, opted to have a bowl first. KKR had a poor start with the bat as both openers Aaron Finch (7 off 5 balls) and Venkatesh Iyer (6 off 13 balls), went back to the pavilion inside the field restrictions. Pinch-hitter Sunil Narine also followed them soon.

However, skipper Shreyas Iyer (28 off 25 balls) and Nitish Rana (54 off 36 balls) managed to get KKR’s innings back on track. After the fall of Iyer, wicketkeeper-batter Sheldon Jackson (7 off 7 balls) perished as well. West Indian all-rounder Andre Russell (49 off 25 balls) provided an excellent finish for the two-time champions. Left-arm pacer T Natarajan was the most vital performer for the Orange Army as he scalped three crucial wickets.

In reply, SRH suffered an early jolt, with opener Abhishek Sharma (3 off 10 balls), failing to get going. Skipper Kane Williamson (17 off 16 balls) and former KKR batter Rahul Tripathi (71 off 37 balls), stitched a partnership of 36 runs before the SRH skipper was sent packing by Russell.

After the fall of Williamson’s wicket, it was one-way traffic. Tripathi and Aiden Markram (68 off 36 balls), ensured that the two-time champions could not make a comeback in the match. Both Markram and Nicholas Pooran (5 off 8 balls), remained unbeaten as SRH completed their chase in 17.5 overs. For KKR, Russell scalped two wickets and the Australian pacer got one wicket as well.

With three wins in last three matches, SRH have reached the seventh spot in the points. Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans (first), Rajasthan Royals (second), Punjab Kings (third), and KKR (fourth) complete the top four in the points table.
