Michael Vaughan feels England missed a trick in the final Test match

England completed a hat-trick of winning a Test series at home against India last week when they defeated the visitors by 60 runs in the fourth Test in Southampton. The side led by Joe Root fielded the same XI for the last Test and it was not appreciated by the former England captain Michael Vaughan.

The English cricket circle was left polarised after the fourth Test once their opener Alastair Cook decided to quit the game after the fifth Test at the Oval. While many were in favour of giving England’s highest -ever scorer in Tests a farewell game, David Lloyd felt that his replacement should be given a chance keeping in mind the future engagements.

Vaughan rues not bringing in Rory Burns

Vaughan said by not picking a replacement for departing Cook, England erred ahead of the Sri Lanka Test series which is due to begin in the first week of November. He was of the opinion that the selectors would’ve picked Rory Burns and played him at three by dropping either of the pace bowlers.

Speaking on BBC Test Match Special, Vaughan, 43, said, “England have missed a trick not bringing in whoever they will replace Alastair Cook with in Sri Lanka this week. They should have gone with the best five bowling options for this pitch and that would’ve freed up the opportunity to bring in the next batsman. They could have played Rory Burns at three.”

Vaughan also went to say that he would have played two spinners but not four seamers. According to him, one of James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Ben Stokes would have been made to sit out. The fourth pacer is Sam Curran who had an impressive run in the series despite missing one Test.

Cook, however, is batting well in London and was unbeaten on 37 until lunch with England’s score reading 68/1 after 28 overs.
