Regarded as a Test specialist, the Sri Lankan left-arm orthodox bowler has had a roller-coaster of a ride in his international career. Rangana Herath debuted in Test cricket at the age of 21 but played a handful of matches in the next ten years. He was always living in the shadows of the great Muttiah Muralitharan.

In 71 ODIs, Herath took 74 wickets before shifting his entire focus to Test cricket in the second half of his career. He went on to grab 434 wickets in just 93 Test matches. This is a record in international cricket of taking the most wickets as a left-handed spinner. This is some achievement for the player who was in the shadows of a great in the early years of his career.

Herath has as many as 34 five-wicket hauls and 9 ten-wicket hauls in his outstanding Test career. After the retirement of the great Murali, Herath led the Sri Lankan spin attack tremendously over the past years.
