India continued their purple patch heading into the 50-over World Cup with a thumping win in the second ODI against Australia in Indore. By virtue of this win, the 'Men in Blue' won the three-match series 2-0 with a game to spare.

Pat Cummins was rested for this match, as Steve Smith took charge of the team. He won the toss and opted to field first on a flat deck at the Holkar Cricket Stadium. Ruturaj Gaikwad departed early but Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer formed a spectacular 200-run partnership off 164 balls to take India to a position of strength. Both the right-handed batters got to their respective centuries and departed shortly after.

Skipper KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan didn't let the momentum slip with a 33-ball 59-run partnership. After the latter departed for a quickfire 31, Suryakumar Yadav joined Rahul. The Karnataka batter was dismissed after scoring a 38-ball 52. However, Suryakumar built on his half-century in the previous game and played a sparkling knock of 37-ball 72 to mesmerise the fans as well as experts. The 33-year-old hit six fours and six sixes in his exhilarating innings as India finished at 399/5 in 50 overs.

Smith used six bowlers and all of them conceded runs at an economy rate of over 6. Cameron Green was the most expensive among them, as he finished with figures of 2/103 in 10 overs.

Ravichandran Ashwin excels with three-for, fifties of Warner and Abbott goes in vain

In reply, Prasidh Krishna dismissed Matthew Short and Steve Smith off consecutive deliveries. After a rain break, the match was reduced to 33 overs and Australia needed 317 to win. After play restarted, David Warner took the attack to the Indian bowlers and scored a 39-ball 53. The southpaw was eventually dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin. Interestingly, Warner batted right-handed against the experienced off-spinner.

Alex Carey and Cameron Green got starts but couldn't capitalise. The visitors were reeling at 140/8 when Sean Abbott decided to have some fun. The 31-year-old cut loose and scored a flashy 54* off 34 balls, forming a 77-run partnership alongside Josh Hazlewood for the ninth wicket.

In the end, Abbott remained stranded as Australia lost by 99 runs (DLS method). Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja finished with three wickets apiece. Prasidh couldn't add to the couple of wickets he took in the second over, while Mohammed Shami picked up the solitary wicket of Hazlewood.
