Performing on overseas wickets defines the class of a cricketer- an age-old adage coughed up by pundits and followers of the game. Home conditions are considered the comfort zones of a cricketer and performing only on wickets suited to their style of play doesn’t always test the mettle and character of the players. Scoring runs or churning out wickets in trying conditions is crucial in order for a player to make a name for himself. The likes of Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting and Jacques Kallis have played exceptionally on foreign wickets and have earned praises and appreciations for their grit as players. The current crop of cricketers has also displayed abilities to perform on difficult wickets. However, there are cricketers who, surprisingly, have performed exceptionally on alien wickets but have faltered at home. He has proved to be so effective in the Test format because he plays his natural game. The conditions, circumstances or the attack doesn’t quite bother Warner who still plays his shots and fancies his chances against the bowlers. South Africa are one of the oppositions he relishes to play against. He has a decent record against the Proteas at home with a Test average of 40.18. The quality has evidently come to aid when he has travelled to India. A Test series in the subcontinent tests application for the Proteas like none other, the spinners are on top and it is important to persist and not be bogged down by vicious turn that the ball takes on occasions. As far as Amla’s numbers are concerned there’s a glaring difference between his average in India and that against the same opposition back at home. Moreover, he has also been elected as the captain of the Test team of the year. The Delhi-batsman has hit a purple patch and has racked up runs at will. He also mustered a brilliant century in India’s ongoing Test series against South Africa, a knock which has earned him accolades. Kohli is also one of those batsmen who average higher in away Tests than in home games, against Australia. He has six centuries against the Aussies in Test cricket, five of which came down under. He is on the verge of scoring 1000 Test runs in Australia, which will be a massive feat. However, in India, he has scored a meagre 330 runs in seven matches, which doesn’t justify his skills. While he can counter-attack and rip apart the bowling, he also has the ability to grind tirelessly in order to save a match for his team. He is one of South Africa’s most reliable batsmen and has hardly let his captain and the team down. Moreover, he has also carved a reputation for himself as a cricketer who can turn a match on its head The Pretoria-born cricketer has a decent record in Tests, however, he has impressive numbers against England. At home, he averages 36.86 with six half-centuries. However, in England, he has racked up runs at a prolific average of 54.5 with the highest score of 174 at Leeds in 2008. He doesn’t play the big and booming strokes, but scores runs with copybook cricket shots. He has displayed nerves of steel and bailed his team out of jail on several occasions. He has arguably been England’s most dependable batsman in Test cricket over the past one decade. The left-handed batsman is one of the few English cricketers who have done well in Australia. However, against the same nation, he has been mediocre in home conditions. He has notched five centuries against the Kangaroos and all of them in their backyard.
