Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2018: Day 8 Round Up

Whilst there were some really interesting games in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on Sunday, it was Rishabh Pant who hogged all the limelight. The Delhi captain scored the second fastest hundred in the history of T20 cricket off just 32 balls to help his side register a big win. In the South Zone, Hyderabad’s chances of qualifying vanished with a third-consecutive loss in the League. Beginning from the big match of the day, Himachal Pradesh scored 144 runs batting first. It was a brilliant bowling display from the Delhi bowlers, which kept the batsmen under control. Chasing the 145-run total, Rishabh Pant smashed 116 runs off just 38 balls and remained unbeaten. He scored 8 fours and 12 sixes in his marathon knock. Delhi eventually chased the total down in 11.4 overs without losing any wickets. In the other big game in Vishakapatnam, Tamil Nadu registered a much-needed win to improve their chances of making it to the next stages. They posted a dauntless 193 runs on board losing just 7 wickets. Skipper Vijay Shankar scored a 16-ball 40 towards the end to help them post a big total. Ambati Rayudu and Tanmay Agarwal threatened to take the game away, but eventually, they could manage 177 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. Karnataka through to the next round Despite Andhra registering a win in their game, it was Karnataka who stormed into the next phase. Mayank Agarwal scored a mind-boggling 86 off 58 balls to help his side score 181 runs on board batting first. Sanju Samson’s 71 off 41 balls and Vishnu Vinod’s stellar cameo seemed good enough for Kerala to go all the way. But the bowlers bounced back big time and helped their side win the game by 20 runs. Smit Patel’s 73 off 57 balls propelled Tripura to a decent 169 runs on board against Bengal. But Shreevats Goswami and Vivek Singh made an absolute mockery of the total in front of them to take Bengal to the 170-run target in 18 overs. They lost just one wicket throughout the innings and registered a 9-wicket win at Ranchi. Punjab suffered another defeat in what has been a horrible season for them. Batting first, Jammu & Kashmir posted 164 runs on board with bits and pieces contributions from the top 5. In reply, Waseem Raza registered figures of 4/16 to help his side bowl out Punjab for 141 in 19 overs. Indian discard Yuvraj Singh once again failed to make his mark on the side.
