Twitter Reactions: Bowlers put Zimbabwe in the driver's seat
Taijul Islam picked up a six-wicket haul for Bangladesh.
All-rounder Sean Williams helped Zimbabwe to a respectable score by the end of Day 1 of the first Test against Zimbabwe at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. The visitors have further tightened the screws and are in a commanding position. At the close of play on the second day, they are leading by 140 runs with three days still remaining in the match.
Taijul shines for the Tigers
The visiting team started the day with an overnight score of 236/5 in 91 overs and with Peter Moor and Regis Chakabva in the middle. Both went to build a stand of 60 runs, which was eventually broken by left-arm spinner Taijul Islam. The visiting team lost their last four wickets for merely 21 runs. Taijul ran through the lower order without much fuss.
The tweaker ended with stupendous figures of 39.3-7-108-6. Apart from Chakabva’s wicket in the second day’s morning, he got rid of Wellington Masakadza, Kyle Jarvis and number eleven Tendai Chatara. Another left-arm spinner Najmul Islam picked up the other wicket of Brandon Mavota. Zimbabwe ended their first innings score at 282 in 117.3 overs.
Zimbabwe rock Bangladesh batting
Bangladesh made a horrendous start to their innings after being reduced to 4/19 in 9.5 overs. While Tendai Chatara nipped out Imrul Kayes, Nazmul Hossain Shanto and skipper Mahmudullah, Kyle Jarvis got the better of Liton Das. Sikandar Raza accounted for the wicket of Mominul Haque. Mushfiqur Rahim looked good during his knock of 31 from 54 balls.
Unfortunately, he fell prey to Jarvis. The likes of Ariful Haque and Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored 41 and 21 runs respectively, but the Tigers were eventually bowled out for 143. From Zimbabwe’s perspective, Tendai Chatara and Sikandar Raza picked up three wickets each. Bad light led to the end of the day’s play after Zimbabwe scored one run in two overs.
