The first Test between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe is currently underway at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, which is hosting its maiden Test. At the close of play on the first day, both teams would be reasonably happy with how things have panned out. In the end, the visitors ended the day with the score at 236 for the loss of five wickets in the 91 overs.
Masakadza guides Zimbabwe
The visiting team won the toss and had no hesitation to bat first. Skipper Hamilton Masakadaza and Brian Chari opened the batting. They looked good with a 35-run opening stand, but left-arm spinner Taijul Islam drew first blood for Bangladesh with Chari’s wicket. The tweaker picked up his second wicket in the form of Brendan Taylor, who could only manage six runs.
However, Masakadza put his head down to scored 52 runs from 105 deliveries after which he was nipped out by fast bowler Abu Jayed. Sikandar Raza looked good for his brief stint in the middle. Unfortunately, another left-arm spinner Nazmul Islam Apu got the better of him. In the 48th over, Zimbabwe found themselves in a rather precarious position.
Williams takes over
Thereafter, the left-handed Sean Williams came to the party and notched 88 runs off 173 balls with the help of nine boundaries. He also built a handy 72-run partnership with Peter Moor. The southpaw not only bailed his team out of jail but also guided his team to a comfortable position. Just when Sean Williams looked good to score a century, Mahmudullah accounted for his wicket.
The wicket came in the 77th over and Bangladesh had a golden opportunity to run through the Zimbabwean lower order. Nevertheless, that wasn’t the case as Moor and Regis Chakabva cobbled together an unbeaten stand of 35 runs. While Moor remained not out on 37 off 122 balls, Chakabva is still in the middle with 20 runs from 48 deliveries.

Zimbabwe have shown enough discipline with the bat so far. If they can display resolve a bit more and post 300+ on this deck, it would be a fighting total. Bangladesh missing the service of another pacer. #BanvZim
