On 10th November, the 3rd match of the Mzansi Super League  (MSL) 2019 was played between Paarl Rocks and Cape Town Blitz at Boland Park. The toss was won by Faf du Plessis, the skipper of the former team, and he elected to bat first. The Rocks got off to a great start from their openers Henry Davids ( 38 runs off 26 balls) and Cameron Delport (19 off 13 balls).

They scored 40 runs in the first four overs and Cameron Delport was the first to get out to Anrich Nortje. The crease was then taken by the skipper of the team, Faf du Plessis, who looked in full flow. He smashed two consecutive sixes on the third and fourth delivery of his innings against the fast bowler Sisanda Magala.

Paarl Rocks post a competitive total of 170 runs

The captain was playing with an aggressive approach and went for another two consecutive maximums against Mohammad Nawaz in the 9th over of the innings. A mix-up between Du Plessis and Dwaine Pretorius led to the former getting run out with a brilliant throw coming from Liam Livingstone. He scored 38 runs in 18 deliveries with 4 maximums and a four to his name.

The batting side at one moment looked like approaching the score of above 190. But, in the 17th over, in an attempt to hit a boundary, the settled batsman Pretorius was castled by Nortje again who eventually finished with the figures of 3/31 in his four overs. Later on, Sibonelo Makhanya played a cameo of 16 runs in 8 deliveries that helped Paarl Rocks post a competitive total of 170 runs at a loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs.

Cape Town Blitz struggle throughout the chase

During the chase, the Cape Town Blitz was hit with an early blow as they lost their skipper Quinton de Kock at the score of 16 runs, who was caught at point by Bjorn Fortuin while attempting to score a boundary off Hardus Viljoen in the third over. Moreover, their high profile batsman Janneman Malan, Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone didn’t contribute well and the team was left struggling at 48/5 in the ninth over.

Things went from bad to worse as no batsman was successful in scoring the runs in their quest to chase the target. Also, the whole team got dismissed at a score of 84 runs in 15.4 overs and Paarl Rocks registered an emphatic win over Cape Town Blitz by 86 runs.

For Paarl Rocks, the pace duo of Hardus Viljoen and Bjorn Fortuin got the early breakthroughs for their team and shared two wickets each. Despite being introduced into the attack late in the innings, the chinaman, Tabraiz Shamsi grabbed three wickets and recorded brilliant bowling figures of 3-0-16-3.
