The Indian team is considered to be hot favourites to win the tournament along with hosts England and defending champions Australia. Despite the fact, that Australia defeated India 2-3 in their last international encounter before the World Cup; former India captain Rahul Dravid still feels that the Indian team is the favourites to lift the prestigious trophy.

BCCI recently announced their 15-man squad which has Virat Kohli leading players like MS Dhoni, Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami amongst others. It includes Dinesh Karthik who pip Rishabh Pant as the second wicketkeeper in the team and Vijay Shankar was preferred to Ambati Rayudu for the no.4 spot. The team also has just three main fast bowlers with Hardik Pandya and Shankar to make up for the fourth pacer.

ICC rankings prove that India should win the World Cup, says Dravid

Dravid, who led India in the World Cup 2007 in West Indies and currently coaches the India A and India U19 squads, is quite confident of the team combination chosen this time around.

“We have the right combination for the World Cup. If India wins the World Cup, we will not be worrying about who won 2-3 or 3-2. There will be an odd series that India will lose. But the [ICC] rankings prove that India is there and should win the World Cup to become No.1,” Dravid was quoted as saying by Time of India.

“In the last 30 months, India has been playing really well, and the loss, much to the credit [of] the way Australia played, came at the back end of a very busy series,” he further said.

The former Indian captain was the highest run-getter in the 1999 World Cup, the last time England hosted the mega event. He had made 461 runs with two centuries in the tournament. When asked about the team combination that has been chosen, Dravid answered, “[They have] a lot of combinations, lot of options. It is a question of them performing in the tournament. You can always argue one or two cases, one or two names. The team has been picked, [now] back it and hope they do really well.”
