The defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) were involved in a no-show run chase against two-time champion Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Friday (October 16). The Knights Riders entered the tournament in a hope of taking revenge for their previous loss against Mumbai by 49 runs at the beginning of the tournament. However, KKR failed in both the departments be it bowling or batting, which resulted in its second loss against the table-topper by 8 wickets.

Winning the toss, the newly elected KKR captain Eoin Morgan chose to bat first. Knight Riders had a disappointing start as half the team including the likes of Rahul Tripathi, Shubman Gill, Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell went back to the pavilion with just 61 runs on the board. Morgan was standing as a lone warrior on the match field but he found an unexpected ally in Pat Cummins.

Giving a glimpse of his brilliant batting skills, Cummins brought in his maiden IPL half-century (53* runs) in just 36 balls. Showing his prowess with the bat, Cummins smashed the two mainstays of MI, Trent Boult and Nathan Coulter-Nile in the last two overs to take his team towards a total of 148. Morgan played a second fiddle to the bowling all-rounder as he could score only 39* runs off 29 deliveries.

An easy chase for Mumbai Indians

After putting up a terrific recovery by the bat, KKR failed to grip the match from the very first over. The Mumbai Indians opening batsman Quinton de Kock played a stunning knock of 78* off 44 deliveries including 9 fours and 3 sixes at a strike rate of 177.27. His counterpart and captain Rohit Sharma also made a significant contribution by scoring 35 off 36.

The all-rounder Hardik Pandya essayed the role of a finisher for his team by smashing 21 off 11 deliveries including 3 fours and 1 six. Thus, Mumbai Indians comfortably chased the below-par total of 148 within 17 overs.

After the clinical victory against KKR, Mumbai climbed to the top of the points tally with a good net run rate and six wins out of eight fixtures while KKR is positioned by the fourth place with four wins in eight matches.
