33-year-old New Zealand batsman Neil Broom may not have age on his side but certainly did repay the faith the selectors showed in him to recall him to the New Zealand limited-overs setup. The aggressive top order batsman scored his maiden ODI ton in the second ODI against Bangladesh today (29th December).

Seven years after his debut, and ensured that New Zealand sealed the 3-match series after being in a tricky position in bowler friendly conditions in the second ODI of the series against the visiting Bangladesh team. Here are some intriguing facts about Broom that sum up his life and cricket journey thus far.

1. Birth

Neil Trevor Bloom was born on 20th November 1983 at Christchurch, Canterbury about 300 miles from Nelson, where he scored his maiden international century.

2. First-class debut

Predominantly a limited-overs player, Broom made his first-class debut as an 18-year-old in the 2002-03 season for Canterbury.

3. Major Teams

Broom has turned out for Canterbury, New Zealand A, Otago, Derbyshire and Otago Volts apart from the first New Zealand team.

4. Under par debuts

20-year-old Broom only managed 3 on his list A debut on 9 January 2004 against Otago, who he later went on to join for domestic cricket in New Zealand. At 22 Broom could only score 9 runs on his T20 debut in January 2006 against the same team.

5. First glimpse

Broom was the leading run-getter for Otago in the 2006-07 season with 644 runs, including 2 centuries, which got him closer to national selection.

6. Tour to India in 2006

Broom was picked for one of the Emerging players tournament in 2006 due to his first-class exploits that season. He was also picked in the New Zealand A team for the A tour to India.

7. First-class statistics

Broom has featured in 135 first-class matches, scoring close to 8000 runs in the New Zealand domestic circuit with an average of 39.4. His figures are complemented by 18 tons and 33 fifties, including the best score of 203* in 2010, in which he combined his brother Darren Bloom for the second highest partnership by brothers in New Zealand first-class history.

8. List A statistics

Broom has a highly impressive list A record for a middle order batsman. He has scored close to 4000 runs in 128 matches with 8 centuries and 21 fifties. His runs have come at a healthy strike rate of 82 and include 2 scores of 150 plus, the highest being 164.

9. Champions League exploits

Broom represented Otago Volts in the 2013 Champions League held in India. He set Jaipur alight on 25th September 2013 with his highest T20 score and only century- an unbeaten 117 of just 56 balls that powered Otago to 242, and a 63-run victory.

10. International debuts

Broom has played 2 formats for New Zealand. He was handed his ODI debut against West Indies in Auckland on January 10, 2009, and his T20I debut just a month later against Australia at Sydney.

11. County deal

Broom recently penned a 2-year contract with English county side Derbyshire.
