1st T20I England vs India Stats Review: Hardik Pandya’s maiden T20I fifty, Rohit Sharma’s feat, and other stats

Hardik Pandya’s all-round brilliance proved too much for the England team as they lost the first of the three T20Is by 50 runs, at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. Hardik smashed his maiden half-century in T20Is and then picked up a four-wicket haul to help India in clinching the encounter. He scored 51 off just 33 which included six fours and one six as the visitors reached a massive total of 198/8 in 20 overs. With the ball, he took wickets of three of the top four England batters as the hosts got bundled out for 148.

Talking about how the match panned out, skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first. He started off well before getting dismissed for 24 off 14. His opening partner Ishan Kishan managed only eight as both got out to all-rounder Moeen Ali. Deepak Hooda’s solid run continued as he played a good hand of 33 off 17. Suryakumar Yadav amassed 39 off 19 with four fours and two maximums with both Hooda and Yadav falling prey to Chris Jordan.

Chasing 199, England got off to a disastrous start as the newly appointed white-ball captain Jos Buttler got out for a golden duck to Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Jason Roy struggled as he mustered only 4 off 16 before getting dismissed to Hardik. Dawid Malan scored 21 off 14 while hard-hitter Liam Livingstone also bagged a duck. Harry Brook and Moeen Ali scored 28 and 36 runs respectively with spinner Yuzvendra Chahal dismissing both the batters as England reached 100 for the loss of six wickets.

Chris Jordan scored an unbeaten 26 off 17 but it wasn’t enough as disciplined bowling from the tourists restricted the English side to below 150. Debutant Arshdeep Singh took 2/18 in his 3.3 overs spell while Bhuvneshwar and Harshal Patel snared one scalp each. For his performances with both bat and ball, Hardik won the Player of the Match award.

1011 – Rohit Sharma completed the landmark of 1000 runs as captain in T20Is. He became the fastest Indian and second fastest overall to reach it in 29 innings. Babar Azam tops the list (26 innings).

1 – Hardik Pandya recorded his maiden T20 international half-century in 43 innings.

1 – Rohit became the first-ever captain to win 13 consecutive T20Is as captain.

4 – Hardik became the fourth player among full-members to score a half-century and pick a four-wicket haul in a T20I match. The other three are Dwayne Bravo (against India in 2009), Mohammad Hafeez (against Zimbabwe in 2011) and Shane Watson (against England in 2011).

4 – Jos Buttler got dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar for the fourth time in T20Is, which is the most he has got out to any bowler. New Zealand’s Ish Sodhi has taken his wicket three times.

13 – With 13 wickets, Bhuvneshwar Kumar is now tied with David Willey (13) at the top for picking up the most wickets among full-members in the first over in T20Is.

4 – Arshdeep Singh became the fourth Indian bowler to deliver a maiden on debut. Ajit Agarkar against South Africa in 2006, Khaleel Ahmed vs West Indies in 2019 and Navdeep Saini vs West Indies in 2019 are the other three bowlers to achieve the feat.

2 – India scripted their second-highest powerplay score against England. Their highest is 70/2 at Bristol in 2018.

50 – Buttler reached the milestone of 50 dismissals as a wicketkeeper in T20 internationals.

82 – With 82 wickets, Chris Jordan surpassed Adil Rashid (81) and is now the leading wicket-taker for England in T20Is.

3 – Buttler registered his third golden duck in the format. His other two came against Australia in 2013 and against India in 2021.

507 – Dinesh Karthik reached 500 runs in T20Is.

53 – Hardik also completed 50 fours in the shortest international format.
