The 2013 Champions Trophy winners, India, were again the favourites due to their form in the bilateral series leading up to the 2017 edition of the tournament. They secured victories over Pakistan and South Africa, while losing to Sri Lanka in the group fixtures. The team then faced Bangladesh in the semi-finals and chased down a total of 265 in just around 40 overs.

The arch-rivals India and Pakistan faced each other again in the finals of the 2017 Champions Trophy. The Pakistan team was having a good run as well, after winning in a convincing manner against England in the semi-finals. In the finals against India, the Men in Green posted a giant score of 358 on the board, with opener Fakhar Zaman hitting a century. But Jasprit Bumrah earlier delivered a no-ball in the fourth over of the innings and provided a lifeline to the centurion when he was caught behind by wicketkeeper MS Dhoni.

The Indian team had a bad start in the power-play overs, with Rohit, Dhawan, and Kohli getting dismissed early. The likes of MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh failed to contribute to the team as well. Although Hardik Pandya hammered 76 off 43 balls, it could not prove to be enough as India lost by a margin of 80 runs.
