Batting teams to be awarded bonus runs in case of slow over-rate by the bowling team

A bowling team is allocated a time frame to finish their 20-over quota. If the team fails to do so, they get penalized for slow over-rate. According to IPL’s code of conduct, the bowling team’s captain is fined 12 lakh for the first offense. If the offense is repeated, the captain will be fined 24 lakhs, and the remaining ten players will get fined six lakhs each or 25% of their match fees, whichever is less.
Although the penalty may seem quite severe, the teams usually don’t mind paying the fines as long as they win their games. There have been numerous instances of a team being guilty of slow over-rate on more than one occasion in a season.
Since the offense takes place on the cricketing field, teams should be penalize on the pitch itself. If a bowling team is maintaining a slow over-rate during an innings, then the batting team should be gifted bonus runs. It may seem harsh on the bowlers, but it will motivate the captains to finish their innings in the allocated time frame.
