5 Instances of teams scoring 600 plus runs in an innings in Ranji Trophy 2015-16: Seven rounds in the league stage of the competition being completed, two more rounds remain to go before the tournament enters the knockout stage. Meantime, there have quite a few high scoring games.

1. Himachal Pradesh 707/8 decl v Hyderabad:

The third round game in Group C between HP and Hyderabad was played between 15th October and 18 October 2015, at HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala. Winning the toss, the hosts opted to field.

Backed by an excellent batting display by Tanmay Agarwal (118, 436m, 302b, 10 fours) and the skipper, Gade Hanuma Vihari (101, 309m, 216b, 8 fours, 1 six), Hyderabad put up 434 runs on the board in their first innings. This was Tanmay’s 4th first-class century in his 10th match (16th innings) and for Vihari this was his 7th FC century in his 33rd match (51st innings).

In reply, HP notched up a huge 707 runs for the loss of 8 wickets decl over six and a half sessions. The principal contributors were the wicket-keeper-opener, Ankush Bains, Robin Bist and Rishi Dhawan. Ankush, playing in his 15th match (19th innings), registered his third first-class century, and scored 161 runs with the help of 22 fours, being at the crease for 475 minutes, faced 302 deliveries.

Playing in his 69th game (114th innings), Bist scored his maiden double century which is also his best FC score. He remained unbeaten on 220* runs with the help of 23 fours and a solitary six, in 483 minutes of stay at the crease, facing 343 deliveries. This was his 12th first-class century.

Rishi Dhawan scored the third century of the innings. Playing in his 44th match (58th innings), Rishi registered his 4th first-class century when he scored 114 runs, studded with 17 fours, facing 145 deliveries in a matter of his 168 minutes stay at the crease. With an unfinished Hyderabad second innings of 2/0, the match ended in a draw. Robin Bist was adjudged Player of the Match.

2. Uttar Pradesh 686/7 decl v Madhya Pradesh:

Played at Teerthankar Mahavir University Ground, Moradabad, the first round match between UP and MP saw a total of 686/7 decl being put up by UP in the first six sessions of play, in their first innings. There were three maiden centurions in the form of opener, Almas Shaukat (128, 467m, 339b, 19 fours, 1 six), Mohammad Saif (198, 435, 287m, 18 fours, 1 six) and the young batting sensation, Sarfaraz Khan (155, 223m, 164b, 15 fours and 4 sixes).

Making his first-class debut in the match, 19-year old Almas registered his maiden century in his very first innings. Playing the second game of his career (second innings), 19-year old Mohammad Saif, also registered his maiden FC century.

18-year old, Sarfaraz Khan, who made history by being the youngest debutant in IPL 2015, representing Royal Challengers Bangalore, also registered his maiden first-class century in this match. MP replied with 531 runs for the loss of seven wickets over the remaining six sessions of the match. The game ended in a draw. Mohammad Saif was adjudged the Player of the Match.

3. Mumbai 610/9 decl v Uttar Pradesh:

The high-scoring sixth round game between Mumbai and Uttar Pradesh played at the Wankhede Stadium between 7th and 10 November 2015, saw Mumbai batting’s mainstay, Shreyas Iyer (137, 181m, 110b, 14 fours, 5 sixes) and Rohit Sharma (113, 206m 140b, 13 fours, 1 six) slam centuries and also put up 98 runs partnership for the third wicket, helping Mumbai pile up 610/9 decl in their first knock.

Playing in his 19th match (31st innings), the 20-year old Iyer, registered his 5th first-class century. Rohit registered his 19th first-class century in his 73rd match (63rd innings). UP replied with 440 runs in their first innings and following on, they put up 140/1 in their unfinished second innings and the game ended in a draw. Shreyas Iyer was adjudged the Player of the Match.

4. Punjab 608 runs v Gujarat:

The third round game between Punjab and Gujarat, played between 15th October and 18th October 2015, at PCA Stadium, Mohali, saw Gujarat put up a total of 467 runs in their first knock, after being put in, to bat by Punjab, who won the toss.

In reply, Punjab hammered 608 runs, backed by three-digit contributions from the opener, Manan Vohra (104, 335m, 22d, 13 fours) and skipper Yuvraj Singh (187, 293m, 233b, 14 fours, 7 sixes). There were good half-century knocks by the other opener, Jiwanjot Singh (51, 110m, 75b, 6 fours), Uday Kaul (78, 283m, 199b, 7 fours) and Mandeep Singh (63, 148m, 94, 8 fours).

The innings also witnessed valuable partnerships. The second wicket partnership between Manan Vohra and Uday Kaul produced 138 runs in 52.1 overs. The fourth-wicket partnership between Mandeep Singh and Yuvraj Singh generated 118 runs in 20.5 overs while the sixth-wicket partnership between Yuvraj Singh and Siddharth Kaul produced 119 runs in 23.4 overs.

Trailing by 141 runs, Gujarat’s unfinished second innings score stood at 135/4 and the match ended in a draw. Yuvraj Singh was adjudged the Player of the Match.

5. Punjab  604/5 decl v Railways:

The tournament opener for Punjab and Railways was played at PCA Stadium, Mohali, between 1st and 4th October 2015. Winning the toss, Punjab opted to bat and put up a massive 604/5 decl on the board in their first innings.

Playing in his 73rd match (120th innings), Uday Kaul registered his 14th first-class ton, by scoring 112 runs (417m, 290b, 10 fours) in the first knock. Mandeep Singh, scoring 109 runs (286m, 213b, 16 fours), registered his 9th FC century.

Gurkeerat Singh registered his maiden first-class double century and also his individual best by notching up an unbeaten 201* (268m, 207b, 25 fours, 5 sixes). This was his third century in his 20th match (32nd innings). The wicket-keeper, Gitansh Khera, playing in his 19th match (32nd innings) scored an unbeaten 102* runs (251m, 169b, 9 fours, 1 six), bringing up his career’s second century.

There were two useful partnerships. The third-wicket partnership put up 197 runs in 70.4 overs, between Mandeep Singh and Uday Kaul. The unbroken partnership for the sixth-wicket, the highest partnership for any wicket in this match) between Gurkeerat Singh and Gitansh Khera produced 306* runs in 59.5 overs.

In reply, Railways could muster only 196 runs, falling short by 408 runs, and had to follow on. However, Railways failed to even make up the first innings deficit while batting the second time. They finished their second innings with 282 runs on the board. Punjab won the match by an innings and 126 runs.
