Once again, he fought his heart out for the country, but lack of support let his effort go in vain. India had to chase down 194 runs in the fourth innings to win the game but fell short by 31 runs. 

<h3>3. 235 vs England, Wankhede, December 2016</h3>

England posted 400 runs batting first and the hosts had a mountain to climb. Cheteshwar Pujara and Murali Vijay had already given India a great start and by the time Kohli came in, the scorecard read 146/2. Kohli and Vijay added 116 runs for the third wicket, where the latter completed his century and departed.
The Indian skipper was in all sorts of trouble as the Indian middle order was tormented. They lost four wickets in a span of 45 runs and despite some fightback from Jadeja, his stay in the middle wasn&#8217;t long enough as well. India were desperate to go past the visiting team&#8217;s first innings score and Kohli needed some support from the other end.
He got it from an unlikely name as Jayant Yadav started stamping his authority with the bat. Kohli completed a fantastic hundred by the time he came in and the duo added a record-breaking, flabbergasting 241 run-stand, which is the best 8th wicket partnership in Indian cricket history.
With the off-spinner&#8217;s support, the run machine completed his third double century and Jayant also completed a century. Thanks to this duo&#8217;s valiant effort, India posted 631 runs out of nowhere and won the game by an innings and 36 runs. 

<h3>4. 153 vs South Africa, Centurion, January 2018</h3>

After losing the first Test in Cape Town narrowly, the pressure had intensified on Kohli &amp; Co. to register a win in Centurion. A scenario which is pretty common in Indian cricket happened once again, where all the batsmen gave up and there was just one man standing alone in the battlefield.
In reply to South Africa&#8216;s 335, Murali Vijay tried his best to block one end. Kohli from the other end, was at his fluent best and was playing on a completely different pitch. This innings epitomized the class he possesses and the technical magician he is.
The rest could only contribute in bits and pieces, but the captain led the ship from the front and ensured it didn&#8217;t sink way too soon. With some great support from Ravi Ashwin, he completed a classic Kohli hundred, proving to the world that there&#8217;s nothing on the cricket field he cannot achieve.
But yet again, this game didn&#8217;t go in India&#8217;s favour. An AB de Villiers masterclass in the second innings tore the Indians apart and the visitors eventually succumbed to a 135 runs defeat. 

<h3>5. 116 vs Australia, Adelaide Oval, January 2012</h3>

This was the knock which well and truly announced Kohli&#8217;s arrival in Test cricket. He was already a budding star in the ODIs and T20Is, but his place in the longest format was in threat. Not many expected him to play a blinder of an innings and save his place, which he eventually did.
Riding on <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/england-vs-india-virat-kohli-equals-ricky-ponting-clive-lloyd-elite-list/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ricky Ponting</a> and Michael Clarke&#8217;s double tons, Australia posted a mammoth 604 runs in their first innings. It certainly was going to be impossible for the Indians to be half as good, especially after losing the first three games. The final Test was no different, the top order was crucified and another humiliating failure was on the cards.
Kohli came in at number 6, with the scoreboard reading 87/4. This was the innings where people saw glimpses of what was to come in the future, as he took the fight against the rampant Aussies and gave it back in style. With support from Wriddhiman Saha and Ishant Sharma towards the end, he completed a scintillating hundred and people still reminisce it as one of the finest from his bat.
The way he celebrated after getting to three figures showed what this inning meant to him. This is how his love affair with the Adelaide Oval commenced and the world knows what has happened thereafter. India lost that game by a gigantic 298-run margin, but a true gem took birth in Adelaide that day who would go on to become an absolute legend in the next few years.
