5. Steve Smith

Steve Smith is regarded as the best batsman of Test format in current times. He has scored 7,540 runs in 77 matches so far at an average of 61.80. This includes 27 centuries and 31 half-centuries.
Steve Smith needs to score 2,460 runs in 55 innings to claim the record for scoring the fastest 10,000 runs in the Test format. In 2019, Smith had surpassed Wally Hammond in terms of scoring the fastest 7,000 runs in the longest format.
Smith was chosen as the ICC Test batsmen of the decade at the start of the year 2021. Given his credentials as a Test player, it may well be possible that Smith is successful in breaking Sachin’s and Lara’s record.
