The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League has already been lit up by the addition of two new teams. The league, now, has a total of 10 teams with the inclusion of the duo. The IPL veteran skipper David Warner has been playing this phenomenal league since 2009 and has been in the auction pool only twice.
He started his career representing Delhi Daredevils and was transferred to Sunrisers Hyderabad after spending five years in DD’s squad. The 35-year-old left-handed batter is the only player to get the Orange Cap thrice in the tournament and he also led his team forward to grab their first-ever title in 2016. He is currently the fifth highest run-getter in IPL.
After the well-known rift between the management and the player, he recently confirmed that he won’t be retained in the squad which might be a piece of sad news for the fans but not for the bidding teams who would be looking for a legendary player to lead them from the front in the tournament.
Here is a list of few teams who could hire David Warner as a captain for the upcoming seasons
1. Lucknow
In the recently concluded auction for the two new teams, the Lucknow city’s team has been brought for a hefty price tag of 7090 crores by the RPSG group who was previously owning the dissolved Rising Pune Supergiant’s team in 2016-17.
The Rising Pune Supergiant’s team management has been successful, considering its short tenure in the IPL. It managed to climb the ladder of playoffs in its second season itself and ended as the runners-up under the captaincy of Steve Smith.
After its dissolution, the RPSG group has been desperate to own a team in this league and has grabbed the opportunity with both hands now. As the management has had a successful tenure after naming the Australian as their skipper, they could go for a similar tactic and hence, pick the Australian (Warner) as their captain.
2. Ahmedabad
The unnamed Ahmedabad team was the second and final team to be picked in the auction. The bidder CVC Capital – the former owner of Formula One – has successfully secured the ownership of a franchise in the Indian Premier League.
The new team would be looking for an experienced campaigner to be their brand ambassador and lead their team to success. David Warner, as mentioned, has a very huge fan base in India and he has always cherished the mutual love.
The addition of this player in the squad could turn out to be the best branding for their venture in a fresh market. The two young teams have an added advantage of picking this player as he has loads of experience. The Ahmedabad team could go for this player as he brings in the brand value along with his cricketing skills.
3. Punjab Kings
The Punjab Kings management has been trying numerous methods to get on track in this tournament but has failed miserably even after various trials. The team previously known as Kings 11 Punjab has just managed to enter twice into the playoffs.
The team’s greatest success came in 2014 when they finished the league as the runners-up. After many disappointing seasons, the management rebranded and renamed the franchise as Punjab Kings in 2021 expecting a fresh start but it also went in vain.
The Punjab team has never got a captain who could bring the trophy to them. The team has tried 13 different captains right from the start and the strategy has not worked for them. With the tournament growing more competitive, the management would like to start afresh again with a new captain who could bring some glory to their side.
4. Royal Challengers Bangalore
Royal Challengers Bangalore has been a franchise with big-name players like Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Glenn Maxwell. But the team has not won a title till date. The team already has an extravagant fan base and big match players too, but things have tended to go awry for them.
Unlike other franchises, the team has been consistent with the Indian skipper Virat Kohli as captain since 2013. The team has always been stated as underachievers despite their strong line-up. This team has been just one step away from winning the tournament on three occasions between 2009 and 2016.
Being the brand cricketer of Royal Challengers Bangalore, Virat Kohli recently confirmed that he wouldn’t be leading the side in the upcoming years. This turned out to be a heartbreak for many RCB fans. After this news, the management would have thought of going for a captain who could lead the side to their maiden IPL trophy.
5. Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata Knight Riders have been a team that has had low and high tides always. The team has claimed the trophy twice in 2012 and 2014. Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian cricketer, is their most successful captain.
He captained the side from 2011 to 2017 and has rewarded the team with two titles. After his transfer to another team, the franchise has not found a captain who could replace his standards. The World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan led their side recently in 2021 and was successful as a skipper after KKR finished as the runners-up.
Though being a reasonable skipper, he has not been satisfactory with his bat. He managed to score just 133 runs out of 17 matches with an unacceptable strike rate of 95.68. His position might be at stake in 2022 as the Knights have a better option of Warner, who can lead and score runs simultaneously.
