It was the first occasion when Kohli was involved in a controversy regarding the DRS system. In the 2nd Test of the bilateral series between India and Australia in 2017 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, fast bowler Josh Hazlewood caught Kohli leg-before wicket, with the ball staying low.

The Australian fielders appealed immediately, as the ball stayed low, and the on-field umpire signalled out immediately. The Indian captain instantly took a review, without consulting the non-striker as he was sure about hitting the ball. During the replay, the Ultra Edge suggested the ball has made contact with the bat and pad at the same time.

With the impact in line, the ball went on to hit the stumps marginally, and the on-field umpire’s signal sealed the fate of Kohli’s innings. However, the Indian team secured the victory by 75 runs in that Test match.
