31-year-old Piyush Chawla is known for effectively using the ‘Googly’ to baffle his preys. However, the leg-spinner had to face an unusual encounter when a selector told him that he was not being picked in the Indian team because he was taking more wickets on the googly.

Chawla, the new CSK recruit, recalled the instance when he was rather criticised for picking wickets with his googlies. In a recent conversation with former India cricketer Aakash Chopra on his Youtube chat show ‘Aakash Vani’, Chawla revealed the amusing response he had got from one selector.

Chawla even gave a befitting reply to the selector and cited Sachin Tendulkar’s ‘straight drive’ example to prove his point. “I remember once I spoke to a selector. That selector told me that I take most wickets from googly,” Chawla said.

“I am someone who does not keep things in my heart, and I reply back quickly. Some people don’t like this too much about me. So, I just asked them ‘if Sachin paaji scores 60 runs from his 100 from straight drive, does that century not have its value’? I think they didn’t like these words. At the end of the day, a wicket is wicket,” added leg-spinner.

Chopra also remembered his bitter experience with a selector. When he had asked a selector why he was not picked for a camp as he had scored plenty of runs, he got the response that it was the ‘quality of his runs’ was not good.

“The way you talked about quality of runs, even I talked to one selector. The selector’s response was that I take more wickets on the googly,” said Chopra.

Piyush Chawla was set to ply his trade for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the thirteenth edition of the IPL. He was also a part of the CSK training camp which also featured stars like MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina.

However, the cash-rich league was eventually postponed in the wake of COVID-19 debacle. But according to reports, the BCCI is trying its best to stage the tournament in the latter part of the year.
