Rishabh Pant, during the 2020 Indian Premier League, was fat-shamed and criticised for not having the desired fitness levels. However, instead of letting the criticism get to his head, the youngster came out firing on all cylinders during the 2020-21 edition of the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

He turned out to be India’s leading run-scorer with 274 runs at a decent average of 68.50. The fact that he played at a strike-rate of nearly 70 showed how fluent he was. He was unlucky to miss out on a century after he got out on 97 in the second innings of the Sydney Test.

However, his unbeaten 89 in Brisbane helped India win the four-match series 2-1. India also retained the Border Gavaskar Trophy after the shoddy performance in the first Test at the Adelaide Oval.

In the meantime, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag lauded Pant for playing the match-winning knock at The Gabba. He also uploaded a meme, involving Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, to praise Pant.

He took to Twitter and wrote, “Kyun nahin, @RishabhPant17. This series win is the kind of victory which one doesn’t get to see in generations . Nothing else matters. Is jeet ki khushi saalon tak manayi jaani chahiye. 19 January Fateh . Jai Bharat.”

After India’s three-wicket win in the final Test, Pant’s joy knew no bounds. The southpaw expressed gratitude to the team management for supporting him throughout. He also said how Team India pulled their socks up after the defeat in the Adelaide Test.

“This is one of my biggest days in life. The support the team has given me even when I was not playing has been incredible. It’s a dream come true,” Pant was quoted as saying after the match.

“We’ve been practicing hard after the first Test. The team management always backs me and tells me you are a match-winner and you have to go out there and win and I am happy I did it today. It was a fifth-day pitch and the ball was turning,” he added.
