Washington Sundar has not looked back since the breakthrough year in the Indian Premier League in 2017. He was signed by the Rising Pune Supergiant to fill the huge void left by an injured Ravichandran Ashwin and the youngster exceeded all the expectations. He turned out to be the team’s X-factor and helped the Pune-based franchise make it to the final against all the odds.

Sundar had done extremely well in the final too, conceding just 13 runs off his four overs but Rising Pune Supergiant ended up losing the thrilling final to Mumbai Indians by just one run. More than his wicket-taking abilities, Washington had impressed one and all with his ability to bowl in the powerplays. He was one of the most economical bowlers in that edition of the IPL.

The fine performance in IPL soon paved the way for his maiden call-up from the senior national team. India called-up the youngster for the series against Sri Lanka at home towards the end of 2017 and Washington went on to make his debut. Since then, he has been a regular feature in India’s T20I team. So far, he has played 15 T20Is as well as one ODI, picking up a total of 14 international wickets while maintaining an economy-rate of less than seven in both the formats.

Washington Sundar has played a pivotal role in Tamil Nadu’s campaign

Currently plying his trade for Tamil Nadu in the Syed Mushtaq Ali, Washington Sundar has impressed former India cricketer Aakash Chopra with his batting performances. In the last three matches for Tamil Nadu, Washington starred with the bat. The youngster showed his finishing skills, helping Tamil Nadu make it to the final and set up a mouth-watering clash with Karnataka.

In his last three games, Washington remained unbeaten while scoring 45, 38 and 54. In those three games, he also picked up four wickets. Impressed with his performance, Chopra took to Twitter to point out Washington’s fine displays with the bat, writing:

“Washington Sundar is bowling really well for India. But is hardly bowling for TN in both 50 and 20-over cricket. Doesn’t get to bat much for India but doing a fairly decent job with the bat for TN.”
