Former Indian opening batsman Aakash Chopra believes that there is no problem to allow Mahendra Singh Dhoni to play under Virat Kohli in ODI cricket. Virat Kohli, who took over from the 35-year old as the Test captain in 2014 and has been rather successful in his crusade. This crusade has also seen the Indians move into the top spot of the World Test match rankings.

Aakash Chopra is clearly impressed with the way Kohli has captained the Indians in the ongoing bevy of international matches, something that has seen them go unbeaten in almost 17 Test matches. With the Australians paying a visiting following the turn of the New Year, it seems clear that the winning streak is far from coming to an end.

Chopra last played for the Indians in the series against Australia all those years ago in 2003/04 which remains to be one of the successes by an Indian team down under. When asked about the same, Chopra went on to endorse the fact that MS Dhoni could indeed play under Virat Kohli. However, he also went on to attest that it would be a call the selectors would have to make given the fact that the 2017 edition of the Champions Trophy would be something the Indians would have to deal with first.

“Yes, Dhoni can surely play under Kohli in ODI,” Chopra said during commentary of the India’s ongoing fifth and final Test against England at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here. “But that’s a call selector need to take post the Champions trophy in 2017. If they don’t view Dhoni as a captain in 2019, it’s only fair to give Kohli two years before the event,” he added.

For a while, Kohli has been tipped to take over as the captain of the Indian side with many endorsing him to become perhaps one of the best Indian captains as well.
