Amit Mishra might have last played for India more than two years ago but he has still been a force in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Delhi Capitals (DC) leg-spinner recently became the first Indian bowler to capture 150 wickets in the tournament and second overall after Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga. However, the 36-year-old is having a poor IPL this year, which is by far his worst so far since 2008.

Mishra has taken part in six IPL games this season but has managed to take only four wickets. He started off with a 2 for 35 against Chennai Super Kings but then has taken two wickets in his next five games. On Monday, he ended up with none for 28 in three overs against Rajasthan Royals which means he has gone wicketless for two consecutive games. His average this year has been over 42 which is the second worst after 2014 when he averaged over 48.

Mishra ended up with just seven wickets that year in 10 matches. In international cricket, Mishra has taken 156 wickets across three formats. In the IPL, he also has the feat of taking as many as three hat-tricks.

Slump in Mishra’s figures over the seasons

To break up Mishra’s performance in the IPL, while he took 61 wickets in 45 matches at an economy rate of less than seven between 2008 and 2011, between 2011 and 2016, he took 63 wickets in 67 matches. From 2017 till 2019, Mishra has taken 26 wickets in 29 matches and his economy rate has only gone worse.

Former India opener Aakash Chopra raised the point about Mishra’s form on Monday saying his performance has been a “grave concern” for the Capitals as he hasn’t looked threatening at all. The Royals put up a competitive total in a must-win game as the DC bowlers failed to impress as a unit.

The IPL 2019 has not been a spinner’s tournament. The top 10 wicket-takers of the tournament have featured only four, including Imran Tahir (16), Yuzvendra Chahal (14), Ravichandran Ashwin (11) and Shreyas Gopal (10).
