The third edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) recently came to a close where six teams competed against each other. However, the Islamabad United emerged victorious in the Final against the Peshawar Zalmi at the iconic Karachi National Stadium. The series turned out to be a massive success with most of the games going right down to the wire.

However, despite the tournament’s success, Aamer Sohail, the former Pakistan cricketer has expressed his concerns to the media over the impact it has created on Pakistan cricket. “It appears to me that the performances in PSL are being used to judge and therefore select players for the Pakistan national team. Even one good performance at the PSL is being touted as reason enough to represent Pakistan which does not make sense,” Sohail was quoted as saying by PakPassion.net.

“Shortage of quality batmen”- Aamir Sohail

Sohail also feared that batsmen are being groomed for aggressive brand of cricket rather than putting a price tag on wickets, which can’t be deemed as an appropriate approach. “This kind of an attitude carries with it a huge peril. What we are saying to the young and upcoming cricketers is that as long as you can hit a few fours and sixes and be a slogger then you can play for Pakistan. As is we are suffering from a shortage of quality batmen and this approach will certainly not help that cause” he added.

The left-handed batsman also mentioned about the harsh treatment the suppliers of raw materials were greeted with in the recently ended tournament. “On top of that, the representatives of the domestic cricket associations who are the providers of the raw material for the PSL, are not even invited to PSL which is incredible and not the way forward if we wish to improve our cricket,” Sohail remarked.

Yesterday, Asif Ali and Hussain Talat made their debuts for Pakistan after impressive performances in the PSL. Talat was impressive in his very first game and was crowned as the Player of the Match having played a wonderful knock against the Windies in Karachi. Meanwhile, the reasoning brought forth by Aamir Sohail can’t be completely dismissed and can hamper their cricket in the long run.
